Meeting on Wastewater Laterals

Repairs to wastewater laterals — individual pipelines carrying wastewater from buildings — often affect public right-of-way. Repairs can be expensive and require immediate response. So the City of Fairfax is considering the establishment of a lateral repair and replacement support program that would share a portion of the costs with customers who experience failures within city streets and easements.

Toward that end, a public-outreach meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Civil War Interpretive Center, 3610 Old Lee Highway in Fairfax. For more information, call 703-385-7850. Currently, property owners are responsible for maintenance and repair of these lines and are encouraged to obtain additional insurance or utility support for these expensive repairs which can cost $30,000 or more.

Help Families Stay Warm

When the weather is cold, many local families can’t afford the luxury of turning on the heat in their homes to stay warm. So the Fairfax-based nonprofit, Our Daily Bread (ODB), is trying to raise at least $16,000 by the end of February to help them.

“It’s incredible to think that, in prosperous Fairfax County, 148,000 people live in or near poverty,” said ODB Executive Director Lisa Whetzel. “When you’re paid by the hour, losing work days because of snow, school cancellations or illnesses makes it so hard to pay for life’s necessities.”

To contribute, go to www.odbfairfax.org. To share the campaign page on social media, use the hashtag #KeepFXKidsWarm. All donations will go directly toward financial assistance for Fairfax County residents in need.
