On Saturday, Sept. 26, as part of National Drug Take-Back Day, 186 pounds of unwanted and expired prescription drugs were dropped off at the Herndon Police Department station on Herndon Parkway. People had the opportunity to drop off expired and unwanted medications between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Herndon station.
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, Herndon Police Department assisted with the security detail for Pope Francis' visit to Washington, D.C. The Herndon Police in the security detail later stopped in Arlington County for dinner. When they prepared to pay for their meals, they were informed a group of women had already paid their bill.
Recent Herndon Police investigations include a September theft incident near Grove St., where during the overnight hours several vehicles belonging to a business were broken into. Approximately $10,000 worth of tools and copper were stolen. An arrest has been made in the attempted abduction case that occurred on July 13, 2015.
On Wednesday, Sept. 16, a man was charged with setting an outside fire in Herndon, fire officials said. He was charged with fire capable of spreading, a class six felony, according to fire investigators. The incident occurred at 2521 Wasser Terrace, an apartment complex in Herndon. He set the fire in an area of bushes and grass near the building, no injuries were reported at the scene.
The deadline to purchase a 2016 town vehicle decal is Nov. 15, 2015. Due to the deadline being a Sunday, payments may be received on Monday, Nov. 16. In addition, the Revenue office will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. All vehicles, trailers, motorcycles and semi-trailers normally garaged, stored or parked within the Town of Herndon limits for more than 30 days are required to display a decal.
