To the Editor:

This fall the Washington metro area has seen more than 50 professional theatres produce more than 50 world premiere plays and musicals by more than 50 female playwrights as part of the Women’s Voices Theater Festival. MetroStage, Alexandria’s professional theatre, was proud to represent Alexandria in the Festival with the world premiere of Gabrielle Fulton’s “Uprising.” Taking place in the aftermath of John Brown’s raid at Harper’s Ferry, it was especially poignant to be here in Alexandria almost in the shadow of Harper’s Ferry.

The play portrays a little-known period just prior to the Civil War and has a collection of memorable characters portraying the life, loves, struggles and decisions confronting them during this perilous time. We are especially pleased to be introducing a remarkable 9-year-old actor Jeremiah Hasty who plays young Freddie in his first professional stage work. The play with original music and choreography enhancing the storytelling on our stage must close this Sunday so if you haven’t seen it already, please plan to attend and support innovative, exciting, original theatre in your own backyard.
