Perhaps you have seen Virginia native Denise Hicks, founder and CEO of Postmodern Foods, at the Great Falls Community Farmers Market on Saturdays or at one of the other popular markets around the D.C. Metro region. Offering a variety of organic and freshly made cold pressed juices, fruit and vegetable smoothies, entrees, and desserts, her focus has been to promote a healthy lifestyle with the mantra "Eat More Plants.” For those lucky enough to secure their favorite food and beverage items before quickly selling out each Saturday, the mantra has been easy to put into practice.
Over the past two years, however, Hicks could not help but notice the steadily growing demand for her health conscious plant-based products and found her customers requesting more availability. She recently expanded the business with a ready-to-go retail location in the Great Falls Village Centre at 762b Walker Road, right between the Old Brogue and the new Pio Pollo.
After having suffered a mysterious autoimmune condition in 2008, Hicks modified her diet by cutting out unhealthy "convenience" foods and added in fruits, vegetables and nuts. She found herself combining them into well-balanced meals and snacks. Within a short period of time, she could not help but equate her renewed health and vitality with the high quality of organic and seasonal foods she was enjoying. Wanting to hone her growing culinary skills, she left the corporate world and moved to Manhattan to attend the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts. From there Postmodern Foods was born.
