The Asian Grill restaurant on Rolling Road in Springfield is celebrating the Chinese New Year now through March 8 with fresh, traditional Chinese dishes in an updated menu that are sure to wow the crowd.
Owned by Darrin Ho and his wife Jenny, the restaurant with a staff of seven in the West Springfield Shopping Center is offering a Chinese New Year feast for $65.95 per person. He says not many local restaurants celebrate the traditional Chinese New Year in Springfield, but like Mardi Gras in New Orleans or green beer on St. Patrick's Day, Asian Grill is a dining destination that people look forward to attending.
"Chinese food has a good variety but not many people are able to cook that," said Darrin Ho. "We try to create it all together during the festival ... People don't even need to see the menu because they trust our quality," added Ho, originally from Hong Kong, and in the business for 38 years; he is the former owner of Ho's Dynasty in Burke.
People have been making reservations for the event since last November, and Ho extended the traditional two-week celebration to four weeks to accommodate his customers' requests. "I like to make all of my customers feel satisfied," he adds.
Ho's Chinese New Year meal is an elaborate process that takes more than one hour to enjoy. It includes appetizers of live lobster with fresh mango salad and special crispy fresh salmon roll; an Alaska king crab meat and fresh asparagus soup; main entrees of fresh lobster tail with ginger and onion in chef's special sauce; dynasty beef tenderloin, chili's sea bass with special homemade sauce; and fresh pineapple fried rice with shrimp and roast pork in pineapple shell. For dessert, there's tropical fresh fruits and a glass of special plum wine. The special runs Feb. 15-19; Feb. 22-25; and March 1-8.
"We love Darrin. He makes our family so happy, and of course, the service and food is phenomenal. Everyone treats us like family," said Jennifer Edwards of Springfield.
"I would say it's great food and great service delivered in a very friendly approach with a great, attentive staff. All the waitresses and cooks are very attentive to their customers," said Ernie Porter of West Springfield.
