Little League to Use Advanced LED Lights

Glyndon Park’s Field is the first Little League field in the United States lit with a LED light source after partnering with the leading innovator in sports lighting, Musco Lighting. The new system enhances playability, reduces spill light and glare, and improves energy efficiency.

The new system provides a complete solution from the ground to the top of the pole. It will reduce the field’s electricity bill by 46 percent when compared to the prior technology and create a great environment for players and neighbors. Musco’s team worked with Town Parks and Rec staff on a design to use six 45 feet-tall poles instead of the typical 70-ft tall poles.

“Residents around Glyndon Park have come to appreciate the mature trees and the natural park setting, so the last thing we wanted to do is put 70-foot galvanized-metal poles in the park” said Vienna Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Salgado. The less-obtrusive poles are coated with a black powder finish to help them blend in better with the surrounding trees. The Town is pleased to be able to take this step towards using more sustainable and energy efficient products.

In a joint partnership with the Town, Vienna Little League contributed $460,000 for the field’s turf and lighting. The town supplied $150,000 for the turf and $50,000 toward lights at the park from the capital improvements program funds.
