The ukelele hui [club] of the Hawai`i State Society and Leolani’s hula dancers provided Hawaiian music and dance for guests of SCOV’s volunteer appreciation luncheon.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna (SCOV), Executive Director Michelle Scott honored SCOV’s 237 volunteers, recognizing outstanding contributions with a pin presentation to several of the service organization’s members. The annual volunteer appreciation luncheon was held Tuesday, April 7 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna, and more than 100 guests attended.

Calling them the “heart and soul” of the organization, Scott thanked the volunteers for their selfless contribution to the SCOV mission, promoting and supporting “purposeful, independent living for mature adults.”

THE BOARD AWARDED recognition “pins” to Gerry Hamilton, Betty Sommerville (in front of Gerry), Joan Hood, Julius and Mary Ann Hankin, Carol Shapiro, Ross Johnson. Not present for the pin presentation were recipients George Kralovec and Ed Lowry. Mary Ann and Julius Hankin were singled out for being their since “day one,” Scott said.

The Hawai`i State Society ukulele hui [club], along with dancers in Hawaiian dress from Leolani’s hula school, provided courtesy entertainment. Lunch dishes came from Maggio’s in Vienna.

Great Falls Assisted Living and The Crossing provided major support for the luncheon. Vienna mayor Laurie DiRocco, Virginia Delegate Mark Keam, and Mike Collins, representing Congressman Gerry Connolly’s office, attended the luncheon.

IN 2014, SCOV VOLUNTEERS contributed 11,830 hours to 387 clients, providing services from senior transportation and social resources to office support and classroom learning adventures. Drivers provided 2,000 round-trip rides to seniors needing SCOV’s most in-demand service.
