To the Editor:
Like most residents of Great Falls, I take pride in our trees. Effort has been made to identify the largest specimens of various species. I was therefore dismayed to recently find a magnificent white oak on a Winstead Street property in Great Falls in the process of being removed. This tree was over 100 feet tall, about five feet in diameter and 15 feet in circumference, and undoubtedly one of the largest of its species in our community. This tree had no dead branches and appeared to be healthy. Isn't there some way that the loss of large, healthy specimen trees like this one can be prevented?
