Steve Hurlburt and his wife Idalia Ramos are expecting their second child at the end of November. Unfortunately, their daughter will need surgery for a serious heart defect several months after being born. The heart condition is called “tetralogy of fallot” which typically features four problems, but at this point their daughter is only exhibiting two: a hole between the lower chambers of the heart, and an obstruction from the heart to the lungs. Steve and Idalia also have a 3.5 year old daughter Zaiya who is looking forward to being a big sister.
Last month, Hurlburt and his family participated in the second annual Race for Every Child to benefit Children's National Health System. He was the second highest individual fundraiser at $6,351. Overall, Children's National raised over $1 million and had more than 4,600 participants.
About his reasons to join the race, Hurlburt said, "The day after Idalia and I learned the upsetting news that our unborn baby girl would need open-heart surgery at two months old, I knew that I needed to do something to turn this difficult situation into something positive for my family and myself. I learned about Race for Every Child and I knew I had to join."
