For the third year, St. Rita American Heritage Girls Troop VA1381 is participating in Wreaths Across America to honor the nation's veterans and their families on Dec. 13, by laying wreaths on the gravesites in Alexandria National Cemetery for Christmas.
The first year the girls went to help, the cemetery had only 400 wreaths, so the girls were told to place a wreath on every 12th grave. The girls made a commitment then to work to fill the cemetery with wreaths. Last year the troop obtained sponsorships for more than 800 wreaths, and it was able to place one wreath on every fourth grave. This year the girls are hoping to place a wreath at every other grave, on their way to covering every grave next year.
The troop's site for the wreaths project is: http://give.wreathsacrossamerica.org/site/TR?team_id=5312&fr_id=2966&pg=team
The deadline is Dec. 1, to allow for Wreaths Across America to order the wreaths and have them delivered to the cemetery on time.
This effort also helps raise funds for the troop, a faith-based character development program dedicated to building women of integrity through service to God, family, country, and community.
