Alzheimer's Association to Hold Workshop

On Aug. 16 at 10 a.m., the Alzheimer's Association National Capital Area Chapter, [3701 Pender Drive, Suite 400, Fairfax, VA 22030] will have a free workshop ifor individuals and families dealing with Alzheimer's who need to know more about what legal and financial issues to consider and how to put plans in place. Topics covered include:

• Making legal plans that fit your needs

• Legal documents you’ll need and what they mean for all of you

• How to find legal and financial assistance

• Practical strategies for making a long-term plan of care

• Tax deductions and credits

• Government programs that can help pay for care

Beware of Phone Fraud

City of Fairfax police are asking the public to be aware of current telephone-fraud schemes. Callers may claim to be Fairfax County Sheriff deputies, a utility company or the IRS, threatening jail time, deportation or heavy fines.

But residents are advised to hang up if they receive this kind of call. Do not provide personal information or money/credit card information to these callers. For more information, visit www.fairfaxva.gov.

Crime Solvers 5K Saturday

The second annual Crime Solvers 5K is set for this Saturday, Aug. 2, at 8 a.m., at the Fairfax County Government Center. The course is certified and chip-timed and is open to the public to participate. Register at http://www.crimesolvers5k.com. The event is a fundraiser for Fairfax County Crime Solvers, a long-standing, nonprofit that’s assisted local law enforcement for 35 years by providing an anonymous means for residents to report criminal information.

Farmers Market on Thursdays

Each Thursday, from 3-7 p.m., the Fairfax County Government Center hosts a farmers market in its parking lot. The Government Center is at 12000 Government Center Pkwy. in Fair Oaks, and the next markets are slated for July 31 and Aug. 7.

Child Carseat Checks

City residents may have their children’s carseats checked or installed by the City of Fairfax Fire Department. For an appointment, call 703-385-7830.

Fairfax City Farmers Markets

Two farmers markets are open for the season in the City of Fairfax. They’ll run through Nov. 1 at the corner of West and Main streets. The Downtown Fairfax Coalition Community Market is held Saturdays, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The Sunday Farmers Market will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, call 703-642-0128.

Seeking Chocolate Recipes

The Chocolate Lovers Festival Committee is requesting residents’ favorite recipes using chocolate as an ingredient to be included in its 2015 cookbook. Recipes must be submitted by Sept. 30 to pmmaddox@verizon.net. Provide name, phone number (only for clarification information), organization or business, ingredients (list in order of use in recipe) and recipe instructions.

Citizens Police Academy

People interested in law enforcement and who’d like to learn about the Fairfax County Police Department and meet many of those who serve in it may now do so. They may apply to join the Sept. 11-Nov. 15 session of the Citizens Police Academy. It’s a free, 10-week program put on by the Police Department and is open to people who live or work in this county.

Participants complete some 40 hours of learning to gain a better understanding of and appreciation for police via a combination of lectures, tours and hands-on activities. Topics covered include the 911 Call Center, patrol, traffic stops, Adult Detention Center, gangs, financial crimes and SWAT team.

Give Caregivers a Break

Fairfax County needs Respite Care volunteers throughout the county to give family caregivers of a frail older adult a well-deserved break. Volunteers visit and oversee the safety of the older adult for a few hours each month. Volunteers are matched with families in or near their own neighborhoods. Support and training is provided.
