Henry Mielo

Long-time Greenbriar resident Henry (Hank) Mielo died Friday, May 17, 2013, at the age of 76, from complications of diabetes.

Attending the New Jersey Institute of Technology, George Washington University, and the Department of Defense War College, he earned degrees in engineering and management. After retiring from the Department of the Navy (at NavSea) Hank was a substitute teacher at Chantilly High School, Rocky Run Intermediate, and both Greenbriar elementary schools before joining Pender Veterinary Clinic as a bookkeeper.

He coached numerous CYA basketball and baseball teams, including the first girls select basketball team, as well as tutoring math to many students over the years. He always loved running into former students and team members as “grown ups.”

Hank is survived by his wife Helen, brother Gary, sisters-in-law Jill, Marilyn and JoAnn, brother-in-law Don Edwing, his children, Jennifer and Bob Shook, Pam and Dorian Zaelke, Mike Mielo, his grandchildren, Brad Goldie and Nina, Daniel and Madhumeta Shook, Debbie and Rhys Franck, and life-long friends and fellow Yankee and Giant fans, Donald Fucci and Steve Feldman.

Hank is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and those who remember, “He helped me pass the math test that got me the job, the school, etc.”

As per his wishes, Hank will be cremated without ceremony and requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He felt strongly that children should be spared Diabetes.
