Mayor William Euille and Del. Rob Krupicka set the stage for a lively and warm gathering of Commonwealth Academy parents, faculty, and friends at the 2013 CARE Awards (Commonwealth Academy Recognition of Outstanding Educators Awards) on April 25 at The Westin Alexandria. Trevor Romain, author and illustrator of children’s self help books, delivered the keynote address and received the 2013 CARE Leadership Award.

Head of School Susan J. Johnson presented the C/A Service Award to Spanish Department chair and teacher Mary Chamberlain for her 10 years of teaching. Lower School teacher Maria Brinza and Math Department chair and Middle School teacher Susan James received the C/A Teacher of the Year Award.

Proceeds from the event go directly to benefit C/A’s programs. This year, proceeds were used for professional development grants for members of its faculty: Ricardo Pontes, Art League courses in photography, photographic lighting tools, and advanced camera techniques; Matthew Briggs, a summer course in fiction writing through Johns Hopkins DC Extension; Jane Furey, a UVA course, “Teaching with Technology for Practicing Teachers,” to enhance data management, digital story telling, webquest and digital instruction; Rebecca Powell, a regional NCTM Interactive Institute in DC, “Engaging Students in Learning: Mathematical Practices and Process Standards,” and Clint Gibson, a two-week course in using modeling in the instruction of physics, Kennebunk, Maine.
