Goats, baby chicks, gardening, and green products will be featured at theSpring Green Fair

Sunday, April 28 12:30–3 pm at the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church (MVUC),1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria Va.

A representative of the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture (http://arcadiafood.org) will discuss Arcadia’s four-acre demonstration farm on the historic grounds of Woodlawn Estate that provides a sustainable model of agriculture and its mobile vegetable truck that serves urban low-income areas.

The fair in sponsored annually by MVUC’s Green Sanctuary Task Force. MVUC was declared a green sanctuary church by the Unitarian Universalist Association (uua.org) in 2008. The church occupies a historic property in the Mason Hill area. It has pioneered renewable energy in Fairfax County by converting its heating and cooling system to geothermal energy, has installed an environmentally friendly system to filter rainwater runoff, maintains a butterfly garden, composts leftovers for integration into its garden plots, and sponsors an active Ethical Eating Group that has produced a popular cookbook.

Features of the Spring Green Fair especially for children include baby goats from Alexandria’s Frog Pond Early Learning Center run by Pam Tinker , an MVUC member. Baby chicks will be brought from Moose Manor Farms of Pomfret, MD, and a representative will provide information on locally grown pasture-raised chickens and explain the difference between store-bought eggs and local farm fresh eggs.

Earth Champs, a local chapter of a network of parents groups helping children become responsible global citizens, will demonstrate garden planting for kids.

Food tastings will feature healthy recipes and a lunch of spring salads and treats will be prepared by MVUC’s Ethical Eating Group. Environmentally friendly household products will be available for purchase and an “Eco-Nice” table will distribute information on free environmentally safe disposal methods for household items like paint, batteries, and on upcoming large-scale shredding programs.

Events at Mount Vernon Estate

Mount Vernon,George Washington's home, welcomes visitors with special activities and tours for visitors. As one of the few early-opening attractions in the Washington, D.C. area, Mount Vernon will open its doors at 8 a.m. daily April through August, giving visitors an extra hour to explore the Estate. The Dinner for the Washingtons walking tour.
