On Sunday, April 21, local families will hit the pavement in the heart of Vienna in an effort to raise money to support educational and enrichment programs at Oakton Elementary School (OES).
The inaugural Family 5K and Fun Run organized by the OES PTA will feature a one-mile “Fun Run” beginning at 8:30 a.m. in addition to the 5K that kicks off at 9 a.m. at 131 Church St. in Centennial Park. An awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the race (approximately 9:45 a.m.). Awards will be distributed to the top finishers in a variety of age categories. In addition, there will be a post-race celebration featuring a DJ, face painting, a magician, a free ice cream truck and refreshments.
Several local businesses, including title sponsors Mathnasium and LM&O Advertising, have partnered with the OES PTA in support of this event. In addition to raising funds for the enhancement of educational programs at OES, the Family Fun Run and 5K intends to promote health and wellness throughout the community and encourage families to have fun exercising together.
"I am thrilled that Oakton Elementary School is sponsoring the Family 5K and Fun Run," said Christine Gray, OES principal. "It is a great opportunity for parents and children to run together and experience the joy of crossing that finish line, while raising money for a great cause."
Gray said she just recently began training for a half marathon as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team in Training.
“Running has provided me the opportunity to challenge myself and push beyond where I ever thought I could go. This is a great metaphor for our students,” she said. “Every day, we challenge them to push the limits of learning and accomplish goals that they set for themselves. “
