Alexandria — “My mother has really enjoyed participating in past shows and we’re hoping we won’t be too late for the 2012 competition! Mom can be a handful at times, but it’s nice to know great folks like you can see past that.”
This is what at least one daughter is saying about her mother who is an artist along with other artists who look forward to Young At Art, now in its 26th year sponsored by Senior Services of Alexandria and The Goodwin House Foundation. The show opens on Monday, Sept. 17 and runs through Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at the Durant Arts Center, 1605 Cameron St. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 20, from 5–7 p.m.
In 1986, the Young At Art juried show was started in the City of Alexandria as a way to highlight the artistic accomplishments, talents, knowledge, and contributions of area artists age 55 and older. This program provides excellent opportunities for communication, fun, learning, and sharing. Our area’s older residents have an opportunity to express themselves and tell their stories through art in a friendly, accessible environment, and people of all ages, races, and backgrounds, can see how our area’s seniors use art to convey how they see the world.
The show is supported by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts in conjunction with the City of Alexandria and private donors.
Artists who are 55 years or older are invited to submit artwork for consideration by the jurors. Submissions must be delivered to the Durant Center on Wednesday, Sept. 12, between 10 a.m. and noon. The entry fee for up to three works is $20 and there is a $5 fee for each additional entry. Cash prizes will be awarded to First Place ($150), Second Place ($125), and Third Place ($100). Five honorable mentions certificates will be awarded as well.
