The Hammond Middle School Music Department competed in Music in the Parks at Hershey Park recently. The Concert Band and Symphonic Band each won first place in their division, and both groups received a rating of Excellent. The String Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra each won first place in their division and both groups received a rating of Superior. The Chamber Orchestra also won the award for Best Overall Orchestra and scored 96 out of a possible 100 points. The Eighth Grade Mixed Choir also won first place in their division and received a rating of
Excellent.
T.C. Williams High School junior Christopher Gerlach won the first-place award at the Distict of Columbia Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Greater DC Invitational Science Fair last week. Christopher received a $100 prize and a private tour of the WJLA-7 weather center with former AMS President Bob Ryan. He also received offers to mentor with scientists at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Environmental Modeling Center. His project, titled "On the Prediction of Severe Convective Wind Gust Events: Their Correlation of Selected Thermodynamic Parameters in the Baltimore-Washington Forecast Area," examined improved methods of forecasting devastating wind storms in the Washington region, to better enable the public to get to shelter in time.
The Alexandria City School Board recently voted to appoint two students as non-voting members of the board: junior Charlotte Clinger and sophomore Edom Tesfa, who were chosen to take on this major commitment after review of their applications, an interview and vetting by the Superintendent's Student Advisory Group. They will begin a one-year term on July 2.

Ronald Wiltsie of Alexandria and a student at Bishop Ireton High School, was named the 2012 recipient of the Saint Michael's College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience. The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement. Wiltsie was presented the book “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers” (HarperCollins 2000) by Luong Ung, a 1993 Saint Michael's College graduate who has become a widely acclaimed author.
Mickayla J. Noel, an eighth-grader in Rachel Payne's Honors Social Studies class at Francis C. Hammond 1 Middle School, has been chosen to participate in the Just The Beginning Foundation's Summer Legal Institute. The five-day program introduces high school students to the legal system, exposes them to careers in the law and provides them with practical tools for achieving their educational goals. Students will work with judges, lawyers and law students on legal reasoning, case analysis, writing, negotiation and oral argument exercises. The George Washington University Law School will host the program this month.

T.C. Williams High School Science Teacher Patrick Earle recently traveled to San Francisco, Calif., as a participant in the Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), hosted by the Japan-U.S. Educational Commission (Fulbright Japan). Earle was selected from a national pool of more than 300 educators to earn this honor. The bi-nationally fully-funded program for U.S. teachers takes place in two parts: a Joint Conference with Japanese teachers in San Francisco, April 29-May 2, and a study tour to Japan, June 19-July 2.

Virginia Department of Education Superintendent of Public Instruction Patricia I. Wright is offering a three-year waiver from annual accreditation to George Mason Elementary School, one of 101 high-performing schools in 21 divisions to earn the distinction. The schools qualified for the flexibility by achieving pass rates of 95 percent or higher in all four tested Standards of Learning (SOL) content areas for two consecutive years. Each school awarded a waiver will remain fully accredited through 2014-2015.
The 101 schools qualify for waivers having achieved pass rates in English, Mathematics, history/social science and science of 95 percent or greater during 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 (results for state tests administered during 2011-2012 won’t be available until later this summer). 72 of the schools are eligible for first-time waivers.
The Board of Education in 2006 authorized waivers from annual accreditation for high-performing schools. Schools granted waivers continue to administer SOL tests, and detailed grade-by grade and subject-by subject results are reported to parents and the public.

Seeking Avid Tutors for 2012-13 School Year
The ACPS Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is seeking individuals willing to work 15-20 hours in a secondary school during the school year. AVID tutors will be required to assist students in their learning by facilitating content-related tutorial groups using a Socratic methodology. They also will have the opportunity to collaborate with middle school and/or high school faculty and other tutors to support and build the AVID program through college- and career-related field trips and motivational experiences. The Bill of Rights Institute announces that seven Northern Virginia high school students, Conrado Castro, James Harkless, Moriah Dreisbach, Neha Telhan, Lauren Ierardi, Nicholas Santoni, and Emily Yaremchuk have returned from a week spent in the nation’s capital.
This July, Castro, Harkless, Dreisbach, Telhan, Ierardi, Santoni, and Yaremchuk attended the Constitutional Academy, the nation’s premier program for high school students to study the Constitution. The scholarships were provided by the Ohrstrom Foundation.
Castro will be a senior in the fall at TC Williams High School in Alexandria, where Harkless will be a junior.
Castro, Harkless, Dreisbach, Telhan, Ierardi, Santoni, and Yaremchuk read the Founding documents and other primary source resources, and discussed the ideals of the American Founding along with contemporary issues with students from across the country and constitutional scholars in Washington, D.C.

ACPS School Nutrition Services (SNS) seeks new members for its advisory group, a collection of Alexandrians who meet at least twice each year. The advisory group provides SNS with feedback about school food services and activities and helps spread the word about SNS missions and objectives. In addition, parents who belong to the advisory group often provide contacts to community resources, such as chefs who can conduct demonstrations at ACPS. The advisory group is also instrumental when it comes to special SNS-related programs, such as Farm2School Week held each November, Strawberries and Salad Greens Day in May and National Nutrition month in March. She was named Most Dedicated Athlete in 2010, won IU's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2011 and was named 2nd Team All-Big Ten in 2012. She was a 2008 graduate of T. C. Williams.
Michaela Reilly Balderston of Alexandria, a graduate of T.C. Williams High School, earned Dean's Award for academic excellence at Colgate University. To be eligible for the award, a student must achieve a 3.30 or higher average while enrolled in four courses. Balderston concentrated in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies and Islamic Civilization.
