— Historic Mount Vernon and Black Women United for Action hosted a remembrance ceremony and wreath-laying at the Slave Memorial on the Mount Vernon Estate on Saturday morning, Oct. 13. The program featured dance, music and dramatic readings followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial. Architecture students at Howard University designed the memorial of a gray, truncated granite column representing “life unfinished” surrounded by three concentric brick circles. Three steps leading up through the circles to the column are inscribed with the words Faith, Hope and Love. The memorial was dedicated and opened to the public on Sept. 21, 1983.
