Arlington In the recently concluded Northern Virginia Senior Olympics several long standing records were broken. Participation was the highest in its 30-year history and the highest number of events — 40 — were offered. It was also a bonus year for Arlington which celebrated a 20 percent increase in participation and the largest number of medals awarded. The total medal count was 94 Gold, 68 Silver and 41 Bronze.
There were a number of multiple (three or more) gold medal winners. In the women’s 50-54 age group, swimming, MacKenzie Kearney and pickleball, Jackie Cubero. In the women’s 55-59 age group, Alice Swan won gold in three mile walk, Mexican Train Dominos, softball throw and football throw. In the 60-64 age group, Charlotte Perdue, 200 meter run, standing long jump, running long jump, high jump, racquetball, shot put, mini javelin; Susan Maguire, backstroke, breaststroke, free style; age 65-69, women, Mary White, 60 meter run, 200 meter run, 400 meter run; men, Charles Kleymeyer, backstroke, breaststroke, free style and half mile.
Additional multiple gold medalists were age 75-79, Alease Brooks, 800 meter walk, 60 meter run, 400 meter run, Frisbee throw, standing long jump, running long jump, mini javelin; 80-84, Tom Quinn, 400 meter walk, 800 meter walk, 1600 meter walk, and Kent Halstead, 60 meter run, 200 meter run, 400 meter run; 85-89, Sun Yang, tennis, pickleball (singles, doubles, mixed doubles).
