Alexandria Archaeology is hosting an archaeology camp for kids this summer, and applications are now being accepted. Campers will learn professional excavating, recording, and artifact-processing methods as they help uncover the Alexandria’s buried past while protecting historical resources.
The camp is open to children ages 12 through 15. There are two one-week sessions, which run from Monday, July 16 through Friday, July 20, and from Monday, July 23 through Friday, July 27. The camp day starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m., and campers supply their own drinks and lunch.
Camp costs $400 per session with some scholarships available. Space is limited to just 15 campers per session, and a non-refundable deposit of $100 is required to hold a slot. Each camper will receive a commemorative t-shirt.

The City of Alexandria’s Beautification Commission is accepting nominations for the 2012 Alexandria Beautification Awards. The awards program recognizes City residents, organizations, and businesses for their efforts in contributing to the beautification of City neighborhoods and public vistas with landscaping and aesthetic design.

The Lyceum’s History Camp for Kids. The Lyceum, Alexandria’s History Museum, is now registering for its three-day camp for children ages 5 to 7. Clio’s Kids mini-camp introduces children to American history and life in historic Alexandria through artifacts, storytelling, singing, crafts, old-fashioned games, and visits to nearby historic places. Clio’s Kids runs from Tuesday, July 24, through Thursday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. Camp will be held at The Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street. Civil War Kids’ Camp. Fort Ward Museum is now registering for its annual Civil War Kids’ Camp, a week of learning and fun for boys and girls ages 8 to 12. Participants explore the lives of Civil War soldiers and civilians with marching, drilling, reenactor guest appearances, games, crafts and other activities.
