Herndon Receives Certificate for Excellence in Financial Reporting

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the U.S. and Canada has awarded the Town of Herndon its Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the town’s comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011. Attainment of the certificate, which stands as the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, "represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management," according to Stephen J. Gauthier, director, GFOA.

An impartial panel of financial professionals judges the CAFR to see that the high standards of the program are met, which include communicating the town’s financial story and motivating potential users and user groups to read the CAFR. Herndon has received the certificate for 37 consecutive fiscal years, dating back to 1975 when the first report was submitted.

Town Of Herndon Advises On Proper Lawn Care

The Town of Herndon’s Department of Public Works advises homeowners who fertilize their lawns to wait until fall, the best time to fertilize, when the roots that will sustain the plants through the following summer are actively growing. Spring fertilization should be limited to a light feeding after the initial flush of growth has subsided in May or early June.

"Lime, on the other hand, should be applied in early spring if soil tests show it is necessary," said Bob Boxer, director of Public Works. "Most lawn grasses grow best at a soil pH between six and seven. A soil test report will provide recommendations on how much lime to apply as well as how much fertilizer to apply in the fall. Too much fertilizer, or spillage on sidewalks and driveways, can cause stream pollution."

Soil testing kits may be obtained from all Fairfax County public libraries or from the Virginia Cooperative Extension office in the Government Center (Pennino building, 10th Floor). There is a small fee for the soil analyses.
