For 50 years, Heritage Presbyterian Church has been an active place of worship in the Waynewood neighborhood of Alexandria. Honoring the past and looking toward the future, the congregation and friends of the church will celebrate this anniversary at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 22, with a special worship service and luncheon. The Rev. William Teng and Rev. Holly Davis, Heritage’s current pastors, will be joined in the pulpit this day by Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Larry Glassco, who was pastor of Heritage from 1975 to 1990.
In addition to the anniversary luncheon, Heritage plans to commemorate its golden anniversary with the installation of a stained glass window dedicated to the anniversary. This window will be inscribed with the anniversary dates and the oft heard phrase, “Yea, we have a goodly heritage” (from Psalm 16:6).
When Heritage was first organized in 1961, it met in the Waynewood Elementary School cafeteria until the congregation was chartered in April 1962. The sanctuary was built in 1965 and stands on what was formerly one of George Washington’s eight farms. The old rail line that once ran between Washington and the Mount Vernon Estate also crossed Heritage’s property.
From its Vacation Bible School, to a meeting place for countless Girl Scout troops, and the many performances by the Mount Vernon Children’s Community Theater, Heritage continues to be a hub of activities not only for its congregation, but for the community.
Heritage also strives to be a mission-minded congregation and shares its building with a Salvadoran congregation, Iglesia Evangelica San Juan 8:32.
Heritage is also the church home of the “Bike Doctor,” Charles Jones, who has collected, repaired and distributed almost 1,000 bicycles throughout our community to those in need.
The community is invited to Heritage’s April 22 celebration. To attend, contact the church Office by April 8 at 703-360-9546 or visit www.heritagechurchva.org.
