More than 500 members of the New York Air National Guard received recognition for their service in a combat zone on Sunday, Sept. 12 during the 106th Rescue Wing Hometown Heroes Salute ceremony. 2nd Lt. Eugene A Finkle from Alexandria, assigned to the 106th Maintenance Squadron was recognized for service overseas. The Hometown Heroes program recognizes Airmen who deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom (operations in Afghanistan) since Sept. 11, 2001.

Army Reserve Brig. Gen. Michael J. Silva of Alexandria was elected President-elect of the Reserve Officers Association at its national convention Feb. 2. He will begin his 2-year term as President in 2013. During his 20 years in Army Reserve units, he has held operations, training, senior staff, and command positions in various assignments to include deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq and Qatar. He also served a tour in the Pentagon in the Iraq Interagency Support group resolving issues between the Department of Defense and the Department of State. Most recently, he deployed as the Commanding General of the 411th Engineer Brigade in Balad, Iraq supporting the Multi-National Corps Iraq.

Chris Cummings has graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., as a classmate of the academy's Class of 2011. Air National Guard Maj. Eric D. Patterson led the Air Force Central Command's Band "Blue Hawk" while deployed to four countries in the Greater Middle East. The band members help build troop morale and public diplomacy while touring the area of responsibility.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Claas Brian P. Navy Seaman Ronald J. Pieper, a 2009 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Pieper completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert H. Dougherty, son of Holly H. Dougherty of Alexandria, and Stephen A. Dougherty, of Alexandria, is currently deployed. Dougherty, along with fellow Sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), hosted a material, maintenance and management assist (3MA) team, as they evaluated the ship's 3M program.
The 3MA team consists of senior enlisted members ranging from chief petty officers to master chief petty officers from Commander, Naval Air Force's 3M training department. They are responsible for assessing Enterprise's 3M program and training Sailors to be more successful at 3M.

Marine Corps Pvt. Naim K. Olverson, son of Aurelia C. Carr- Olverson of Alexandria and Arthur F. Olverson of Columbia, Md., earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. For 13 weeks, Olverson stayed committed during some of the world's most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to Marine instilled with pride, discipline and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. One week prior to graduation, Olverson endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Sarah T. Self-Kyler, daughter of Linda and Burl Self of Alexandria, VA and fellow Sailor aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) formed a Coalition of Sailors against Destructive decisions committee. CSDD is a peer-to-peer mentoring program geared toward assisting Sailors in making positive decisions in all areas of their lives. The program was originally created for those in ROTC, JROTC, and similar programs. However, it quickly spread throughout the Navy ahd it is now a resource for all Sailors.
