These clubs are anything but traditional.

— In a tale nearly as old as time, Groucho Marx famously resigned from the Friars' Club in 1949, saying, “I don't want to belong to any club that would accept me as one of its members.” Had Marx lived in Alexandria, he'd probably still be working his way up the legendary years-long waiting list at the Old Dominion Boat Club, founded in 1888 and the oldest of the membership organizations below that offer an alternative to traditional golf course and country clubs.

Old Dominion Boat Club

Initiation fees are $1,000, but you'll have plenty of time to save up for it by the time you submit a membership application and work your way up the 200-plus waiting list. With a premier location at the foot of King Street — not to mention the center of the controversial waterfront development plan — this is as local as it gets in Alexandria.

Fraternal Order of Eagles

You've probably passed it a hundred times on Cameron Street. Club membership gives you access to a clubroom and events including the legendary steak nights and poker games. You likely be the first of your friends to join since even those who have lived here for decades haven't heard of it. An organization dedicated to helping the community, the Alexandria Aerie donated more than $17,000 to local charities in 2011.

American Legion Post 24

Located in the center of Old Town adjacent to Gadsby's Tavern, Post 24 is open to active and retired military personnel along with various dependents and descendants. Great spot for shooting pool but also an opportunity to engage in many charitable community endeavors. The camaraderie with the servicemen is more than worth the $35 per year dues.

CXIII Rex Cigar Bar

CXIII Rex is a members-only cigar club located above Landini's Restaurant in Old Town. Movie stars and politicos alike have enjoyed the renowned hospitality (and discretion) of Franco and Noe Landini. Initiation fee is $10,000 with a required monthly minimum in spending. Even in this economy, the place is always packed.
