<b>Woodson Celebrates Homecoming with 42-7 Win</b>
The W.T. Woodson High School varsity football team honor its Homecoming crowd by defeating West Potomac High School 42-7 on Oct. 9.
Quarterback Connor Reilly led the team with 35 rushing yards and 232 passing yards. He also threw three touchdown passes including a 48 yard pass to Paul Fridley.
The Cavaliers are now 7-1 this season and continue their 2009 season against T.C. Williams High School on Oct. 17.
<b>Robinson Runs Over Chantilly</b>
The Robinson Secondary School varsity football team extended its unbeaten streak to seven with its 35 to 21 victory over Chantilly High School (3-3) on Oct. 9.
The Rams trailed in the first half 14 to 7, but 21 third-quarter points helped Robinson overcome the deficit.
Key standouts in the game were running backs Connor Riley, who had 122 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and junior Jared Velasquez, who ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
The Rams are now 2-0 in the Concorde District and continue their season against Westfield High School (2-4) on Oct. 9.
<b>Bendorf Named Coach Of The Week</b>
On Oct. 14, The Washington Redskins named Robinson Secondary School varsity football coach Mark Bendorf with Coach of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 5.
Bendorf has been the head coach at Robinson for 13 years and during that tenure has won two Virginia State Football Championships (1997, 2001) and is a two-time Virginia State Coach of the Year (1997, 2001).
"Coach Bendorf develops a tremendous work ethic in all of his players through a year round strength and conditioning program that has built confidence in our student-athletes," Robinson Director of Student Activities Marty Riddle said in a press release.
As an award for Bendorf’s honor, the Robinson football team will receive a $1000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program.
The Rams are currently undefeated with a 6-0 record this season.
<b>Fairfax Cross County Runs in Manhattan</b>
The Fairfax High School cross country team competed in the Manhattan College Cross Country Invitational at the Van Cortlandt Park in New York City on Oct. 10.
The Rebels finished 78th out of the 208 teams participating.
Senior Kevin Dowd was the Rebels’ top finisher and placed fourth in the Championship Division with an average pace of 5:02 per mile and a total time of 12:32.40.
<b>Woodson Girls Cross County Takes Second at Glory Days Invitational</b>
The W.T. Woodson High School cross country teams competed at the Glory Days Invitational on Oct. 10 and finished near the top of the leader board.
The girls’ team finished in second place and were led by senior Erica Howes, Isabel Greenberg, Anna McAuley and Shoshana Oppheim.
The boys’ team came in fourth place out of the 36 that competed and were lead by sophomore Paul Gates and junior Phil Shutler.
<b>Goblin Gallop Fun Run Registration</b>
The 16th annual Valvoline Instant Oil Change Goblin Gallop 5K Race and 1K Fun Run will be Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Fairfax Corner Shopping Center. The fun run starts at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K, at 9 a.m. Register at www.Active.com.
Many participants wear Halloween costumes, more than $3,500 in prizes are given away, and race proceeds benefit children with cancer.
The Goblin Gallop starts and ends in front of Coastal Flats restaurant. Entry fees are $20 for the 5K and $15 for the 1K. After Oct. 19 and on race-day, registration is $25 and $20, respectively. For more information, see www.goblingallop.org.
The course is USATF-certified, and prizes valued at $150, $100 and $50 are awarded to the top three, overall, male and female finishers. Prizes are also given to the top three male and female finishers in various age categories.
