Here’s a recap of submitted results from the last week of NVSL dual meet action this past weekend:
The long-awaited showdown for the 2009 Division 1 NVSL title took place on Saturday (7/18/09) when the Chesterbrook Tiger Sharks made the short trip to <b>Overlee</b> for the final dual meet of the season. Both teams had 4-0 records and the winner would claim the crown. A close meet was expected and the teams did not disappoint. There were many very close races where every start, stroke, turn, and finish mattered. In the end, Overlee emerged victorious by a 219.5-182.5 score and claimed their fourth consecutive Division 1 title. In addition, this victory secured Overlee’s 21st consecutive dual meet win, a third consecutive Triple Crown (Division title, Divisional Relay title, and All Star Relay title), and their 26th Division 1 title overall.
The Overlee Flying Fish also captured the second leg of the NVSL “triple crown” by winning the All Star Relay Carnival held on Wednesday, July 15 at Springboard pool in Springfield. Overlee qualified a league-high 20 relays for the meet and finished with a final score of 586. Tuckahoe finished a surprising second with 486 points. The rest of the top six teams were Chesterbrook (444), Fairfax (356), Lee-Graham (306), and Fairfax Station (282).
Overlee relays were victorious in three of the 22 events and added three seconds, two thirds, two fourths, two fifths to finish with 12 relays in the top five. Overlee scored the most points on the girls side and were fifth on the boys side. No other team had both boys and girls in the top five. As mentioned above, three new team relay records were set during the meet. The 9-10 girls won both of their relays with record times. The 100 Medley Relay team of Sarah Dickson, Michaela Morrison, Emma Day, and Anna Polise finished with a 1:10.94 that broke the record time of 1:11.20 from 1984 by Stephanie Bowers, Allison Newlove, Jennifer Brumbaugh, and Megan Naill. The 100 Free Relay team of Anna Polise, Emma Day, Lydia Packard, and Michaela Morrison swam to a 1:02.90 to knock off the 1995 record of 1:03.43 set by Joanne Kelly, Emily Loney, Meagan Kline, and Devin Colley. The Boys 11-12 Medley Relay team of Timothy Aldinger, Sean Coleman, Ryan Baker, and Andrew Loranger lowered their own team record for the second time this season with a 1:02.09. Throughout this summer, they have knocked nearly two seconds off the previous record from 1995 (1:04.08).
McLean defeated <b>Donaldson Run</b> this past weekend, 212-190. However Donaldson Run swimmers set several records, starting with Andrew Fleckenstein in the boys’ 11-12 50-meter freestyle. He clocked a time of 28.87 seconds, breaking the prior team record of 29.09 held by David Shomaker since 1990! Bryan Meade also broke a team record in the 11-12 50-meter backstroke race. In addition, the relay team of Meade, Fleckenstein, Jack Stoors, and Michael Poppalardo broke their own team record by registering a time of 1:03:52.
The Division 8 swim team from <b>Dominion Hills</b> won their final meet at home against Parliament with a score of 203 to 199. Double winners were David Hughes, James Hughes, Grayson Jazwick, and Andrea Oaxaca.
