<b>Youth Baseball</b>
The Arlington Rebels — a 10U Babe Ruth All Star Team — had an outstanding run in the State Championship Tournament last week in Herndon. The Rebels went 3-1 in pool play, putting them in a three-way tie for first place. Unfortunately for the Rebels, only the top two from each pool of five teams advanced to the semifinals, and the Rebels fell on the short end of the runs allowed tiebreaker. The Rebels' only loss in the tournament came to eventual state champion Williamsburg. The Rebels had victories over semifinalist Madison (8-4), Southwest Virginia (14-3) and an exciting 4-3 extra-inning victory over an all-star team from Manassas that had beaten the Rebels soundly in last year's state tournament.
In the three wins, Gavin Anderson, Jake Karton, Ethan Heckler, Michael Lowen and Andy Belilos all pitched brilliantly for the Rebels. At the plate, the Rebels were led by Tony Burke (800), Andy Belilos (.714) and Frank Sammartino (.600). Gavin Anderson scored the game winner against Manassas in the seventh inning on a dive just past the catcher's attempted tag. Also playing a big role in the Rebels successful run were Travis Thein, Alec Glasser, David Judkins, Will Stengle, Jack Karangelen, Andrew Keane, Steve Dierkes, and Andy Collins.
The Rebels next play in a tournament in Cove Creek, near Charlottesville July 18-19. The Rebels then host the 10U Southeast Regional tournament at Barcroft Park July 23-26. The winner of the regionals moves on to the Babe Ruth World Series in Colorado.
<b>Swim Results</b>
Overlee emerged victorious with 238 points to just 198 for second-place Chesterbrook in last week’s Division 1 relay carnival. The remaining teams, in order of finish, were Fairfax Station (148), Vienna Aquatic Club (146), Hamlet Swim Club (120), and Little Rocky Run (106). Victories in both the girls and boys mixed age 200 free relays provided an early boost for Overlee and gave them a lead they never relinquished. The medley relays followed and the Flying Fish stayed hot winning seven of the ten medley relays. Four more victories in the freestyle relays, along with two seconds and two thirds, kept Overlee ahead of the pack.
In all, Overlee had 13 first-place finishes, two seconds, and four thirds. The girls were particularly dominant as they won ten of their 11 relays. One new team record was set as the Boys 11-12 100 Medley Relay team of Timothy Aldinger, Sean Coleman, Ryan Baker, and Andrew Loranger broke their own record set four days earlier with a time of 1:02.35.
Division 8 Dominion Hills Pool lost against Mosby Woods in Fairfax with a score of 247 to 155. Dominion Hills is now 2-2 heading into the last week of competition. Double first place winners were Kara Fox, 9-10 Free, 9-10 Breast and Eric Weiner, 9-10 Free, 9-10 Fly.
Donaldson Run lost to Lee Graham 234-166 this past weekend, but the loss played second fiddle to a couple record-breaking performances. Gregory Crosswell broke a 33-year Donaldson Run record in the 15-18 boys’ breast stroke, swimming 50 meters in 32.13 seconds. Andrew Fleckenstein also broke a team record in the 11-12 age group butterfly race.
The Washington Golf & C.C. swim team completed its dual meet season in the "A" Division of the CCSDA with a perfect record of 4-0, emerging victorious against Bethesda, Kenwood, Congressional and Argyle. In addition, the team swam away with top honors at the Divisional Relays held last week at WGCC. Notable was the undefeated record of 8 & under swimmer Richard Gentry, who posted new records in the back and fly. Ryan Baker also set a new record in the Boys 12 & under back, and the junior medley relay teams of Peyton Nassetta, Erin Stuver, Kirby Nassetta, and Alston Offutt and Richard Gentry, Grant Welch, Ryan Baker and Ian Stuver established new records as well. Amanda Didawick also posted a new pool record in the 14 & under fly at Argyle. WGCC left the competition in the dust at the Divisional Relays, taking firsts in 10 of the 22 relays.
Swimmers on winning relay teams included Erin Stuver, Faith Palmer, Olivia Tripodi, Kate Rita, Ryan Baker, George Cranwell, Patrick Rita, Mike Poppolardo, Mason Nassetta, Alston Offutt, Amanda Didawick, Ellen Carey, Will McMahon, Ian Stuver, Chris Paul, Daniel O'Berry, Laine Hamilton, Jane Townshend, Katharine Donohoe, Olivia Shipley, Richard Gentry, Zach Tripodi, Andrew O'Berry, and Angus Ricks. Remaining on the WGCC schedule are the Divisional Championships and C.C.S.D.A. Championships.
