With a spot in this weekend’s Northern Region Championships on the line, wrestlers from both West Potomac and Mount Vernon took part in their respective district tournaments last Saturday. Each team had several success stories.
Mount Vernon had many reasons to celebrate, garnering second-place honors overall in the National District tournament at J.E.B. Stuart High School. The Majors had three champions, including Chad Eason (103 pounds), Dusty Floyd (130 pounds), and Joey Marino (145 pounds). Mount Vernon also had solid showings from Jaeton Foxley (3rd place, 119 pounds), Matt Coffman (5th place, 140 pounds), Trevor Meadows (2nd place, 152 pounds), Habib Balde (3rd place, 171 pounds), and Martin Chavez (4th place, 215 pounds).
West Potomac was paced by a quintet of regional qualifiers at last weekend’s Patriot District Championships, led by district champion Stephen Howell (189 pounds). Senior Sam Agyemang lost in the second round of the 135-pound bracket but rebounded to place third. Michael Tse (4th place, 130 pounds), John Rice (4th place, 152 pounds), and Jordan Blair (4th place, heavyweight) also turned in solid performances.
Area wrestlers now move onto this Saturday’s regional tournament, which will be held at Fairfax High School.
<b>Mount Vernon Basketball Update</b>
The Mount Vernon boy’s basketball team clinched the outright National District title with a 63-62 overtime win over Stuart last Friday night.
After sophomore Jesse Konadu sank two free throws to draw the Majors within one point with just eight seconds remaining in the extra frame, junior Skylar Jones stole the ensuing inbounds pass and converted a layup that gave Mount Vernon the lead for good.
Jones led Mount Vernon in scoring with 24 points, while Konadu chipped in 14 points. The win extended the Majors’ winning streak to a remarkable 14 games. Mount Vernon (16-4 overall, 11-0 National District) can cement its undefeated district season with a victory over Yorktown this Friday. From there, the Majors move onto the district playoffs, which are scheduled to begin next Tuesday.
With a win this Friday against Yorktown, the Mount Vernon girl’s team can also clinch the National District crown. The Majors are currently tied with Edison atop the standing with one district loss apiece, but Mount Vernon would win the tiebreaker because of its record against common opponents.
District playoffs for the girls also begin next Tuesday.
<b>District Gymnastics</b>
In a mild upset, the West Potomac girl’s gymnastics team took second place at the Patriot District Tournament last Friday night. Led by Sarah Woodward placing on the vault, beam and uneven parrell bars and a strong showing by Julie Raumthong and Cara Yaworski on the floor, the Wolverines beat out West Springfield to advance to the Regional meet this upcoming Thursday at Lake Braddock.
<b>Lee-Mount Vernon Soccer Registration</b>
The Lee-Mount Vernon Soccer Club is celebrating 40 years of serving children in the communities surrounding Lee District and Mount Vernon in southeastern Fairfax County. The club currently serves over 2,000 children ages four to 18 with numerous programs to fit every skill level, from the most basic skills and recreational play, to more competitive travel teams all the way to the national team level.
The core of LMVSC has always been its recreational teams, which comprise 1,700 players in kindergarten through high school, grouped into teams formed based on neighborhoods, which play in the fall and spring seasons. But about 10 years ago, recognizing the lack of opportunity for those players who wanted to take their game to a higher level, LMVSC created a travel program. From a modest start with just seven teams, the program has grown hundreds of boys and girls from eight to 18 years old on teams created through competitive tryouts.
