Del. David Poisson (D-32) has appointed Ibrahim Moiz to be his legislative assistant in the upcoming General Assembly session, which convenes Jan. 14. Moiz served last year as law clerk to Maryland District Court Judge Thomas Love and more recently in the Fairfax law firm of Garbia, MacGregor & Plocki. He also previously served as director of civil rights for the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Chris Kingery of the Loudoun County Office of Transportation Services has received the "Unsung Hero" award from the Chesapeake Chapter of the Association for Commuter Transportation, which includes Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. Kingery was nominated for her outstanding customer service skills in dealing with the growing ridership of LC Transit, the county’s commuter bus program.
Coed Venturing Crew 761, chartered by the Rotary Club of Sterling, recently held its eighth annual Court of Honor where one Outdoor Bronze, three Gold, four Ranger and nine Silver awards were presented to local Venturers. In addition, five BSA Scuba and Snorkeling, and two Recruiter special awards were presented to Venturers and Advisors.
The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors appointed Joseph G. Paciulli to serve on the Loudoun County Economic Development Commission as member emeritus for 2009. The commission serves as a forum through which business and government leaders meet to exchange ideas. It is organized with 27 voting members, featuring representatives from key economic development businesses and organizations from diverse industries.
Army Reserve Spec. Anthony P. Brown of Potomac Falls has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Brown is the son of Norman Brown of Silo Mill Court, Sterling.
CNOCM David A. Orso, USN, retired, of Loudoun County, has been appointed as the executive assistant in the Office of Policy at the Department of Veterans Affairs of the Veteran Services Foundation.
The Loudoun Free Clinic in Leesburg named Loudoun residents, Sharon R. Meyers and John H. Cook III, M.D., to its 15-member board of directors. Meyers, director of catering for the National Conference Center at Lansdowne, brings extensive experience in management, marketing and new business development to the board. Cook, founder of Loudoun Internal Medical Associates, is a specialist in geriatric care.
Luz CofresÃ-Howe was named budget officer for Loudoun County. CofresÃ-Howe was first hired as the county’s capital budget manager, a position she has held since July 2007. Prior to joining the county, CofresÃ-Howe was deputy director of finance and administration for the San Francisco County Transportation Authority.
Seneca Ridge Middle School students Annie Franks, grade seven, and Carolyn Deroster, grade eight, were selected as finalists for the Flute Society of Washington Flute Master Class. The Flute Fair will be in Reston Feb. 21. Annie will perform a Telemann Fantasias and Carolyn will perform "The Pearl of Siberia." Flutists from across the Washington, D.C., region entered and competed in this event. Three finalists were selected.
Jessica L. Niepokoj and Todd D. Lancaster II of Sterling and Alysa R. Heilmann of Potomac Falls were named to the dean’s list at Coastal Carolina University for the 2008 fall semester.
Dan J. Schardein has been hired as Loudoun County’s zoning administrator, effective Feb. 19.
Schardein comes to the county with more than 22 years of zoning experience. He has worked for Stafford County since 1986, most recently as business retention and development manager in the Department of Economic Development. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Schardein was a founding member and first president of the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials. He is a certified zoning administrator and a graduate of the Virginia Certified Board of Zoning Appeals.
