The Yorktown football team suffered a setback during Thursday’s scrimmage against West Springfield, losing the versatile Kyle Bailey to what is likely a season-ending injury.
The junior, who was slated to be a receiver, safety, kick returner and back-up quarterback for the Patriots, suffered a broken collar bone and separated non-throwing shoulder on a play when he was tackled from behind.
"It’s huge," Yorktown head coach Bruce Hanson said of the effect Bailey’s injury would have on the Patriots. "The kid was playing a million positions for us."
Hanson said Yorktown and West Springfield were about even by scrimmage’s end, but the Patriots performed particularly well in the early going.
Yorktown hosts its season opener at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 against Wilson (Washington, D.C.).
