Michael Hussey from Alexandria has made the Dean's List for Franklin & Marshall College's spring 2009 semester. Hussey is the son of Thomas Hussey and Cheryl Hussey and is a graduate of Potomac School.

Daniel Thomas Noler of Alexandria was named to the Dean's List of Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts for the Spring 2009 semester.

Two local students have been accepted by Hampden-Sydney College and will begin classes in August 2009.

* George Forrest Allen, enrolling as a Venable Scholar, is a graduate of West Potomac High School and is the son of George and Susan Allen of Alexandria.

* Frank Butner Clay IV, enrolling as a Patrick Henry Scholar, is a graduate of St. Stephens & St. Agnes School and is the son of Ann and Frank Clay of Alexandria.

Registration is taking place now for Northern Virginia Community College’s fall semester. Students may enroll online 24 hours a day at www.nvcc.edu, by telephone at 703-323-3770, or in person at NOVA’s campuses in Alexandria, Annandale, Loudoun, Manassas, Springfield and Woodbridge.

The 16-week fall semester begins Aug. 24. NOVA also offers two eight-week sessions, starting Aug. 24 and Oct. 21.

Three Alexandria residents graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy on May 30, 2009.

* Victor McKoy, senior class president, was an outstanding athlete while at R-MA. He ran track and played both football and basketball. He was named MVP for both the football and track teams. At the end-of-year awards ceremony, Vic was presented the Athlete of the Year Award. Cadet Captain McKoy served the corps of cadet as a squadron executive officer. Vic earned the Dean’s List for maintaining a grade point average above 3.3 during the fourth quarter of his senior year. Victor also played in R-MA’s award-winning band. He received scholarships totaling $124,000 and was accepted to six colleges and universities. Vic plans to attend the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

* Paul K. Piontkowski Jr., son of Dr. and Mrs. Paul K. Piontkowski, played lacrosse while a student at R-MA. He was a member of the lacrosse team, which won the Delaney Athletic Conference Championship for the first time this year. PJ received scholarships totaling $20,000 to attend Lynchburg College in the fall.

* Trae Primrose, son of Richard and Julie Primrose, ran track while a student at R-MA. He received scholarships totaling $26,000 and was accepted to three colleges and universities. Trae plans to attend Middle Tennessee State University in the fall.

Miranda Chadwick of Alexandria was named to the dean's list at Curry College in Milton, Mass., for the spring term.

Steven Jeffrey Brown has been selected by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg for Honors Admission for the fall of 2009. Brown is the son of Les Brown and Patti Dilley of Alexandria, and is a graduate of Mount Vernon High School. A National Merit Scholarship Competition Commended Student, he was president of the chess team and captain of the "It's Academic" team. He was a member of the varsity tennis team and volunteered at the library and in Phi Theta Kappa community service activities.

Kendall Cole Davis of Alexandria was named to the dean's list at Lafayette College for the spring semester.

Gabrielle Rose Kuhn has been selected by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg for Honors Admission for the fall of 2009. Kuhn is the daughter of Doug and Elizabeth Kuhn of Alexandria, and is a graduate of Bishop Ireton High School. A National Honor Society member, she is the recipient of the President's Education Award. Kuhn was an events coordinator for the drama club and a member of the International Thespian Society. She participated in a Catholic youth group work camp.

The following students were among the May 9 graduates of Longwood University:

* Anthony Louis Piro of Alexandria received a Bachelor of Science summa cum laude in Business Administration.

* Katelin Brittany Mills of Alexandria received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Patricia Casey Clay of Alexandria, daughter of Frank and Ann Clay, graduated magna cum laude from Lynchburg College on May 16 with a B.S. in business administration. She also received highest honors in communication studies.

Hilary Adams from Bishop Ireton School has been selected for and has chosen to attend this summer's residential Governor's School at Christopher Newport University in Newport news, Va. Each summer, 400 students who have exhibited exceptional ability in their particular discipline are invited to participate in the Governor's School for Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts.

Sean Edward Sutherland of Alexandria received a B.A. in sports management from Lynchburg College on May 16th.

Natalie Titerence of Alexandria graduated from Niagara University in New York on May 17 at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Clair Young Sun Maher has been selected by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg for Honors Admission for the fall of 2009. Maher is the daughter of William F. Maher Jr. and Michelle Berberet of Alexandria, and is a graduate of T.C. Williams High School. A member of the National Honor Society, Maher is a recipient of the Percy Lavon Julian Achievement Award for biology. A member of the girls' tennis team, she has been a scholar athlete all four years. She's also a member of the Simple Changes Therapeutic Riding Program and rides, shows and trains horses. In addition, she is an accomplished pianist and a volunteer for a high school tutoring program.

The University of Mary Washington has announced its Dean's List for the 2009 spring semester. The following area students are among the 624 students who have been named to the Dean's List:

Frances Kupersmith, a resident of Alexandria, was awarded Dean's List honors for academic achievement during the spring 2009 semester at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Erin Bischoff, a resident of Alexandria, was awarded Dean's List honors for academic achievement during the spring 2009 semester at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

The University of Mary Washington has announced its President's List for the 2009 spring semester. The President's List recognizes outstanding academic achievement at the university by full-time students who attain a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

The following area students are among the 81 students who have been named to the President's List:

* Nicholas Wagner, a junior, of Alexandria.

* Lindsey Bechtold, a senior, of Alexandria.

Annela Mary Levitov of Alexandria, a Junior at Gettysburg College, has been placed the Deans' Commendation List for outstanding academic achievement in the spring 2009.

Brandon William Donovan of Alexandria was named to the dean's list at DePaul University for the spring quarter.

John Weaver of Alexandria received a Bachelor’s Degree during the 2009 Commencement Ceremonies of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, held on Sunday, May 17. Weaver, the child of John Weaver, majored in Political Science. The graduate studied abroad in London.

Kelsey Morrison of Alexandria was named to the dean's list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. for spring quarter 2009. Morrison is a fashion marketing and management major and is seeking a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Bianca Velez of Alexandria made the Dean's List for spring semester 2009 at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Laura Whitney Fishburn of Alexandria graduated on May 23 from Marist College with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences.

Kathryn Funkhouser of Alexandria has been named to the Dean's List at Drew University for the Spring 2009 semester. In order to qualify for the Dean's List, students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or above, which is equivalent to a B+ or better.

Jordan James Hatchell of Alexandria was named to the President's List at Union University for the spring semester. The President's List includes full-time students who achieve a 4.0 grade point average on a four-point scale.

Longwood University has selected 536 students to the Dean’s List for outstanding academic achievement during the spring 2009 semester. Among those who earned an academic average of 3.5 to 3.99 were:

Alma Jean Mitchell graduated with a Spanish degree from Grove City College in Pennsylvania. in May. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Mitchell of Alexandria is a 2006 graduate of T.C. Williams High School.

Gustaf Robert Cavanaugh, a junior at Washington and Lee University, has earned honor roll status for the winter term. He is the son of Mr. Robert P. Cavanaugh and Mrs. Claudia Fletcher of Alexandria.

George Paul Barsness Jr., a junior at Washington and Lee University, has earned dean's list status for the winter term. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George P. Barsness of Alexandria.

Caroline Marion Habliston, a junior at Washington and Lee University, has earned honor roll status for the winter term. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Habliston IV of Alexandria.

Abigail Carpen, daughter of Susanne and Thaddeus Carpen of Alexandria, received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamilton College in commencement exercises on Sunday, May 24. Carpen graduated with a degree in art history.

Sterling Lumpkin of Alexandria received a bachelor of general studies from the College of Public affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska Omaha during the May 8 commencement.

Maxwell Brindle, son of Eugene and Connie Brindle of Alexandria, has been named to the Dean's List at Hamilton College for the 2009 spring semester. A rising junior majoring in government, Brindle is a graduate of St. Stephens and St. Agnes School.

Headmaster Jay Stroud has named Elizabeth Wiley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wiley Jr. of Alexandria, to the Commended List at Tabor Academy for semester 2 of the 2008-2009 school year.

The Brendan F. Fuller of Alexandria was among the 856 University of Scranton graduates who received bachelor's and associate's degrees at its undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 31, 2009, at Wachovia Arena. Fuller received a bachelor's degree in Communication .

Ciara Alexandra Robinson of Alexandria graduated from the Mary Baldwin College on May 24 with a degree in psychology. She is the daughter of Giovanna Athias of Alexandria.

David A. Hollowich of Fort Belvoir was named to the Columbia College dean's list for the March 2009 to May 2009 award period.

Christian Baxter of Alexandria graduated from St. John's College High School on June 5.

Melinda K. Bloomquist of Alexandria was among the 677 students who receive a post-baccalaureate degree at The University of Scranton graduate degree commencement. Bloomquist received a Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction at a ceremony in Scranton's Byron Recreation Complex on campus on May 30.

Lucy Walsh of Alexandria received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Communication within the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont.

The T.C. Williams High School Symphonic 1 Band earned the Music Festivals National Concert Band Award for receiving the highest score of any band to perform at more than 20 performance sites across the eastern seaboard this spring. The band earned this honor for its performance during the Music Department's spring trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn., in April.

Jennifer "Lynne" Wilson of Alexandria has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany. She is a 2005 T.C. Williams High School graduate and a recent cum laude graduate of Wake Forest University. She is presently interning at the Institute of Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin for the summer 2009, and will begin her Fulbright assignment in Cologne, Germany, this September, for a term thru July 2010.

Lynne is the daughter of John W. Wilson III and Jennifer Joy Wilson. Her brother, JW, is part of the T.C. Williams class of 2009, and will be graduating in a few weeks.

Daniel R. Ackart of Alexandria graduated from Philadelphia Biblical University on May 16. Daniel has earned a Bachelor of Science in Bible degree. Daniel was one of 179 students in PBU's class of 2009.

Jane Prather Humphreys of Alexandria, daughter of Frances and Walter Douglas Givhan, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in art history from the University of the South on May 10.

Djidjoe “Coco” Agbeyibor of Alexandria, an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science major at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was recently selected to join the Bernard M. Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program’s Class of 2011. The program is a new educational initiative at MIT that combines leadership development with the rigor of the MIT educational experience.

Jennifer Williams of Alexandria was named to the Dean's List for the Spring 2009 semester at Widener University in Chester, Pa.

Tulane University in New Orleans awarded degrees this month to 2,200 graduates. Among those graduated from Tulane as a member of the historic "Katrina Class," those undergrads who were at Tulane for only a few hours when they had to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, were the following local students:

Gardner-Webb University is pleased to announce that Karissa G. Jensen of Alexandria, whose major is sociology, was among a group of students to make the Dean's List during the spring semester.

DePaul University student Brandon William Donovan of Alexandria has been named to the Dean's List for the 2009 Winter quarter.

Jennifer Williams of Alexandria graduated from Widener University's School of Nursing on May 15 during a traditional Nightingale Ceremony. The ceremony recognizes the ideals of Florence Nightingale, who stood as a caring and devoted nurse.

Michael Scott Robinson, a resident of Alexandria, was recently awarded a Bachelor of Arts from SUNY Cortland.

Daniel Lader of Alexandria graduated from George Mason University, earning the B.S. in Geography.

West Potomac Academy is establishing a partnership with the new Copyright Alliance Education Foundation to help communication arts students learn to promote and protect their intellectual property. Students in Professional Television Production, Professional Graphics Studio, Music and Computer Technology, Dance, and Fashion Design will be offered membership in the Copyright Alliance.

Jared L. Kuhmerker, the son of Peter and Lynne Kuhmerker of Alexandria, graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelor of Science in Cell Biology/Biochemistry during commencement ceremonies may 17. He graduated from T.C. Williams high school in Alexandria.

Anna L. Tupy of Alexandria made the dean's list for the Spring semester at Coastal Carolina University.

Lauren Grace Szelenyi of Alexandria graduated with a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction on May 23, during the 139th Commencement at McDaniel College.

Rodney Rudolph of Alexandria graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a degree in applied management on April 25.

Clara Alice Ball of Alexandria graduated from Wofford College with a bachelor of arts, English and a concentration in creative writing on May 17.

Margaret G. Taylor, daughter of George and Beth Taylor of Alexandria, has been named a Summer Science Scholar for 2009 at Kenyon College. A graduate of St. Stephens and St. Agnes School, Taylor is a sophomore majoring in biochemistry at Kenyon.

Sadiqa Boura of Alexandria, a senior in American University’s College of Arts & Sciences majoring in biology, was named to the fall 2008 Dean’s List.

Marni Byrum of Alexandria received Virginia Tech’s Alumni Distinguished Service Award for 2009. She is an attorney in private practice with emphasis on labor, employment, and personnel law, whose law degree is from Pepperdine University. She has remained involved at her alma mater by serving on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, the President's Advisory Committee, and the Economic Development Advisory Board.

Glenn Backus of Alexandria received a bachelor of science in psychology from Lynn University in the commencement ceremony Saturday, May 9.

Johnny Earle, chief executive officer and founder of Johnny Cupcakes Inc., kicked off Design Week 2009 at West Potomac Academy on May 18 in the Springbank Auditorium at West Potomac High School.

William Johnson of Alexandria earned JROTC Promotions at St. John's annual JROTC Federal Inspection and Commissioning ceremony on Thursday, May 14. The position of cadet colonel was transferred from senior Andrew Riggott to junior William McNamara.

Brendan McKeague of Alexandria was among 990 students from Providence College who received undergraduate degrees during the 91st commencement exercises held on Sunday, May 17. Brendan received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

Ashton Walker of Alexandria received a Master of Science in Administration from Lynn University in the commencement ceremony Friday, May 8.

Wade H. Rice III of Alexandria was recognized for his completion of the Honors Program at the Neumann University Academic Awards Convocation on Friday, April 24.

Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy is one of 27 finalists for the National Schools of Character Education competition, sponsored by the Character Education Partnership. Lyles Crouch, the only finalist from greater Washington, D.C., advanced to the national competition after winning the statewide competition for having the most outstanding character program of all the schools in Virginia.

Three long-time Alexandria community organizations — the Rotary Club of Alexandria, the Goodwin House, and the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra — recently collaborated to sponsor a music competition for juniors and seniors in area high schools. Six outstanding Alexandria student musicians participated in the Alexandria Rotary’s annual Music Competition. Judging the competition, and then leading the students in a follow-up “Masterclass” one-on-one instruction, was Kim Allen Kluge, music director of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra.

Annie Trimber, a flutist and a senior at West Potomac High School, was awarded the Rotary Club of Alexandria’s Gold performance award and will now move on to compete in the Regional competition for the $5,000 in music scholarships awarded each year by Rotary District 7610.

While Trimber took the top Gold honors, Silver performance awards went to three students at St. Stephens & St. Agnes School: Kelly Bragg, a vocalist; Will Jakes, a cello player, and Ian McLeod, a pianist. Bragg and McLeod are seniors and Jakes is a junior. Bronze performance awards went to Tia Norris-Towler, a violin player a T. C. Williams junior, and to Dorothea Kamara, a senior at West Potomac High School.

On Feb. 28, the T.C. Williams High School Titans Debate Team competed in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Patriot District Tournament. Titan debaters Yasmin Faruki and Saif Chames-Eddine qualified for VHSL Regionals when both won their elimination round.

Fairfax County Public Schools students have been named to the Virginia All-State Chorus for 2009 and performed as a group April 23-25 at Massaponax High School in Fredricksburg. FCPS students selected for the 2009 Virginia All-State Chorus were: Kimmy Hann, Alex Pham, Ali Ruth, and Alexa Silverman, from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and Edgar Blancas, Sally Henrehan, Dorothea Kamara, Rachel Mattis, Kate Mullen, and Shayna Oakley from West Potomac High School.

In the search for The Country’s Funniest College Student, RooftopComedy’s 2nd Annual National College Comedy Competition named T.C. Williams High School graduate Chris Stephens to Columbia College Chicago’s Comedy Team.

T.C. Williams High School Graphic Design student Sarah Davis created the winning artwork in the City of Alexandria’s annual contest to make a logo for the city’s Earth Day celebration. Davis’ collage depicting a tree with roots made up of pictures of earth-friendly transportation modes will be used for all promotional materials advertising this year's event, which will be held at Ben Brenman Park on April 25. Several students entered the competition. Second place went to Neeracha Sunthontip, a T.C. Williams Art 1 student.

Three T.C. Williams High School Chamber Choir students attended the District Ten Honors Choir during February. Participants included junior Jessica Palma and seniors Maham Ayaz and Christian Jimenez. Ayaz was chosen as a soloist for the performance on Saturday afternoon. In a separate audition at the event, Jimenez was selected to be one of two district representatives for Tenor 1 at the All-Virginia Honors Choir in April.

Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics third-grader Narisse King is among the winners in Delegate David Englin’s first annual Youth Art Contest. King’s abstract skateboard design was displayed in the General Assembly building in Richmond. She will receive a custom skateboard deck and a T-shirt from Convoy Skateboards.

Four Alexandria City Public Schools musical groups received straight I (Superior) ratings at the District X Band and Orchestra Festivals this past weekend. The Superior performers include the George Washington Middle School Symphonic Band, continuing a multi-year streak; the ACPS All-City Sinfonia Orchestra; the Francis C. Hammond Middle School Orchestra and the George Washington Middle School Orchestra. The T.C. Williams Chamber Orchestra received an overall rating of Superior, as did the T.C. Williams High School Symphonic Band, which performed music rated a Grade VI, the highest level of difficulty.

The George Washington Middle School Jazz Band, under the direction of Rick Seracino, won second place in the middle schools division at the Chantilly Invitational Jazz Festival on Friday, March 27. Their performance earned them superior ratings from each of the three judges (like District judging, Superior is the highest rating possible) and their overall point total earned them second place honors behind Rachel Carson Middle School in Herndon. Luke Young, lead trombone, was selected to the festival's all-star jazz band.

Alexandria resident Rebecca Siegal, 18, won the 2008 Sea Scout of the Year award and the Catherine A. Mullikin Sea Scout Volunteer of the Year Award. The latter is named for a Sea Scout who was killed by a drunk driver in 1998. Siegal has also been accepted for the Sea Scout Advanced Leadership (SEAL) Training in June. Siegal, a homeschooled high school senior, is also taking courses at Northern Virginia Community College. She plans to complete her associate's degree in 2010, then transfer as a junior to a university. Her goals include working in a field using her passion for geology, anthropology, archaeology and forensic science to help people understand the past better.

Cara Toscano of Alexandria, graduated during The University of Findlay’s spring commencement May 2, in the Koehler Complex on campus. Toscano is expected to receive a bachelor of science degree in pre-veterinary medicine/biology. Toscano, a 2005 graduate of Bishop Ireton High School, is the daughter of Mary and James Toscano.

Ritsuko Schiff of Alexandria has been awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Kaplan University. Schiff's accomplishment was celebrated during a live graduation ceremony on July 25 in Chicago. Award-winning actress America Ferrera, star of the ABC TV series "Ugly Betty," served as the commencement speaker.
