Chantilly High's Choral Music Classes will hold a free concert on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. featuring 700 students in the gymnasium. The community is invited to have dinner on location, as Chik-fil-A and the Texas Roadhouse will be selling food beginning at 4:30 p.m. through the end of the concert. A portion of the proceeds will cover concert expenses. In addition, the Music Boosters will be selling snacks and beverages.
Alexis Reyes of Centreville recently completed an innovative training program at the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Working with Tire Kingdom, the Manassas Campus automotive program created a special five-week course to teach basic automotive skills and provide employment opportunities.
The program, called Model Adult Automotive Pathway (MAAP), teaches such skills as tire mounting and balancing, oil change procedures, fluid exchanges, and vehicle inspections. Students spend three-fourths of the course practicing hands-on tasks in the shop and the rest of the time in the classroom.
Andrew Osinbajo of Westfield High School was named a 2009 National Achievement Scholarship program semifinalists in an academic competition for Black American high school students conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). He will compete for more than 800 Achievement Scholarship awards, worth $2.6 million, to be awarded next spring. The awards will be supported by corporations, professional organizations, foundations, and funds from the NMSC. To be considered for a scholarship, semifinalists must advance to the finalist level by fulfilling additional requirements.
Chantilly High School and Chantilly Academy are the recipients of a $100,000 subgrant from Wright State University, College of Engineering and Computer Science, to enrich its engineering mathematics program. Chantilly Academy is the only high school participant in an engineering consortium of 16 colleges and universities that has been awarded a three-year National Science Foundation Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) Phase 3 grant, A National Model for Engineering Mathematics Education, totaling $2 million. Chantilly Academy is in its eighth year of offering pre-collegiate engineering education to students from more than 20 high schools in FCPS. In its efforts to enrich its engineering program, Chantilly will use the grant to redesign an existing 10-week freshman-year Introduction to Mathematics in Engineering Applications as a 36-week high school mathematics elective course, Engineering Mathematics. The advanced mathematics elective will be offered at Chantilly Academy in fall 2009. Grant funds will also provide instructor salary, classroom and laboratory resources and textbooks.
Chantilly Academy’s Girls Exploring Engineering program is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the ExxonMobil Foundation for the 2008-09 school year. The program was established to significantly increase the number of young women enrolled in engineering courses at Chantilly Academy and the number of young women considering engineering careers; pursuing degrees through engineering school application and enrollment; and realizing subsequent careers in engineering.
The program is a yearlong elective course, Engineering Systems 1, for an all-female class. Last year, 12 of the 14 seniors were offered admission to schools of engineering in Virginia and in other states.

Clifton Children's Academy is offering a new Accelerated Junior Kindergarten program.
