Making Her Mark

Stephanie Gerow, a 2008 West Potomac High School graduate, is already making her mark as a member of the women’s soccer team at the College of William and Mary. In just four games for the Tribe, Gerow has played 205 minutes and already registered three assists. She has quickly established herself as a player who is able to elude defenders and perfectly place the ball at the feet, or on the head, of her teammates. Gerow recorded her assists against Penn State, Syracuse and Brigham Young University, three well respected opponents.

Gerow was a prolific scorer during her time at West Potomac, registering 22 goals as a sophomore in 2006 and leading the Wolverines with 12 goals last spring.

Titan field hockey off to fast start

All the attention at T.C. Williams may be towards the team competing in the school’s new stadium and field, but there’s an unheralded squad off to a quick start while playing at nearby Minnie Howard Park.

The Titans’ field hockey team started the season off with three straight wins, the latest coming in the team’s home opener against Edison last Friday.

So far, T.C. Williams has outscored its opposition 9-2, including a 2-0 shutout of Edison and a 3-0 shutout against Washington-Lee.

The Titans’ unbeaten record will be up for grabs in the next week with games at neighborhood rival Episcopal and at Mount Vernon.

Ireton loses big

Coming off an encouraging 24-7 win over Archbishop Carroll to open the season, the Bishop Ireton Cardinals suffered its first setback this past weekend against O’Connell. The Knights thumped the Cardinals 34-0, putting a damper on a game that was re-scheduled to Sunday afternoon from its originally scheduled Saturday game time due to the rains brought by Tropical Strom Hanna.

“I think the big thing for us was they just out executed us,” Ireton coach Tony Verducci said. “It was just one of those days where you have to tip your cap to them. We didn’t respond the way I had hoped or expected.”

The Cardinals are attempting to replicate their landmark 2007 season that saw them compile a 9-3 record en route to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state finals. Ireton will look to get back on the winning track this Saturday when it faces McNamara in a home game.

Area LAX Team Ranked No. 1 in Nation

Capping off one of the best seasons in school history, the 2008 St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School girls’ lacrosse team was named #1 in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine last month. Lacrosse Magazine is the official publication of US Lacrosse, the governing body for the sport, and SSSAS teams have never missed the top ten since the rankings began.

The historic season included a school record 26 wins and no losses. The team won their 14th consecutive ISL-AA title, and defeated Collegiate to win the Virginia private school state championship. During the regular season, the Saints also defeated nationally-ranked teams McDonogh School, Moorestown, and Notre Dame Prep (Maryland).

Annual Coaches Reception

The Alexandria Sports Club will hold its annual high school coaches night Tuesday September 16 at 7 p.m. at the Old Dominion Boat Club. All four Alexandria high school football coaches — Dennis Randolph of T.C. Williams, Tony Verducci of Bishop Ireton, David Holm of St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, and David Hess of Episcopal — are scheduled to appear. The event is free and open to the public.
