Madison Crutcher and Jasmin Harper of South Lakes High School were named semifinalists for the 2009 National Achievement Program in an academic competition for Black-American high school students.

Jim Wagner of South Lakes High School was one of 50 educators selected to attend the National Gallery of Art’s 2008 Teacher Institute on 17th-century Dutch art. The two six-day seminars in July and August brought together teachers of art, social studies, and related subjects from 22 states. Focusing on the Gallery’s collection of 17th-century Dutch art, they explored ways, including image-enhanced podcasting, to integrate art objects into the classroom.

Students at Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences will speak with Richard Garriott, the next civilian to fly into space during his flight to the International Space Station through a live video teleconference on Monday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. The event will be broadcast live on www.challenger.org.
