</b> The City of Alexandria Commission for the Arts announces a “Call to Artists” for the creation of the 2008 Alex Awards. Artists, who either work or live in the City, are asked to submit a proposal for up to five art pieces. All proposals must be submitted to the Alexandria Commission for the Arts’ office (1108 Jefferson St.) by the close of business on Wednesday, June 6. The theme of the 2008 Alex Awards is “The Global Arts in Alexandria,” and the artwork created for the award should evoke this theme. The Alexandria Commission for the Arts encourages the public to nominate Alexandria artists and art organizations for the Governor’s Awards for the Arts 2008. An exhibit by Civil War soldier, artist and musician William Lydston, Jr., will remain at Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site through Dec. 31, to coincide with a statewide celebration of music in Virginia.
