The Chantilly Minority Pyramid Student Achievement Committee will hold its annual, awards ceremony this weekend. High-school and middle-school students will be honored Saturday, June 7, at 5 p.m., at Chantilly High. Elementary-school students will be honored Sunday, June 8, at 4 p.m., at Virginia Run Elementary.

These local students were honored by the Northern Virginia District PTA in its PTA Reflections Contest. Those with additional awards in parentheses were also recognized by the Virginia PTA.

Young actors in the Northern Virginia area can learn about the theatre arts at Young Actors' Workshop June 23-27, from 9 a.m. to noon. This workshop is open to elementary school students in rising grades 3-6. Tuition is $100. This year's theme "Step into Shakespeare" will allow the students to explore the words of Shakespeare in a new way — with fun songs, scenes, hip-hop, step dancing, games, and other modern forms of expression. Sponsored by Westfield Theatre Boosters and led by Westfield High School Theatre Arts Assistant Director Zoë Dillard, Young Actors' Workshop teaches students basic acting, singing and dancing skills. Westfield Theatre students will serve as counselors in the camp.

Centreville High’s Choral Department will present its annual Spring Concert, "Broadway Pops," Thursday-Friday, June 5-6, at 7:30 p.m. each night, in the school theater. Tickets are $5 at the door for adults and $3 for students with IDs.

This concert is a potpourri of music from the Broadway musical and pop genres. The Men's Ensemble will sing a Beatles medley and the Women's Ensemble will perform a medley of songs done by strong female characters in various Broadway shows.

The Concert Choir will present a medley from "The Lion King," Bella Voce will perform a medley from "Mamma Mia" and the Symphonic Choir will sing a medley from "West Side Story."

The Madrigal Ensemble will perform three, vocal jazz tunes: "This Masquerade," made famous by guitarist George Benson; "Undecided," a swing tune from the 1930's; and a vocal jazz arrangement of "In My Life" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. And rounding out the evening’s entertainment will be a variety of senior solos.

Summer Classes for Retirees — The summer session of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at George Mason University runs from June 16th through July 25th. Registration closes May 28th. Tech Adventure Camp is designed to give current 5, 6, & 7 grade students an opportunity to explore careers and technology as they rotate through six areas over a two-week program. The courses offered at the 2008 camp are:

Design in Mind, Focus on Forensics, A Virtual Life, It's a 3D World, Kid's Chef, and Robotic Engineer. Camp will be held at the Chantilly Academy, July 7-18, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The cost is $400 for Fairfax County residents and $500 for out-of-county residents. Susan Pollard of Centreville has received a scholarship from Virginia Commonwealth University in recognition of her efforts inside and outside of the classroom. Pollard, a junior English major at VCU, was one of 12 students to receive scholarships at the Fourth Annual VCU Business Services Scholarship Award Ceremony on April 29. Pollard was selected for the VCU Scholarship for the Advancement of Women, which recognizes work that benefits, promotes and advances women or women’s issues at VCU. She will receive $2,500. The funding for the VCU Business Services Scholarships is a result of agreements with the university’s business partners to support and enhance scholarship opportunities for VCU students.

Richard W. Hartman III received the juris doctor degree Saturday, May 10 from the Washington and Lee University School of Law. Hartman was among 146 students receiving their law degrees during commencement ceremonies held on Washington and Lee University’s historic front lawn. He received his B.B.A. degree from Radford University in 2005. Hartman is the son of Richard W. Hartman II and Patricia A. Hartman of Centreville.

Scott Gilmore Decker of Clifton graduated magna cum laude from Lynchburg College with high honors in management on May 10. Lynchburg College is a private college in central Virginia enrolling 2,500 students in the liberal arts and sciences, as well as professional and grad studies.

Sean Michael Fitch, a 2006 Centreville High School graduate, made the Dean's List at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY, and earned a perfect 4.0 this past semester. Sean's parents, Tom and Beth Fitch, are longtime residents of Little Rocky Run. Sean is working towards obtaining a B. A. in Arts Administration with an emphasis on Studio Art. He will be a junior next fall.

Colin Powell Elementary Web curator Rhapsody Barbrow has been awarded the FCPS Best Practices Award for May for her work on the school web site. Barbrow was cited for excellent adaptation of the elementary school template (http://www.fcps.edu/powelles). Awards are presented monthly during the nine-month school year.

Junior Adrian Martinez, the son of Frank and Rozana Martinez of Oak Hill was awarded the Military Officers Association of America Award at Randolph-Macon Academy. The award is presented to a junior with exceptional leadership potential, demonstrated through loyalty to the corps, school and country. The Shenandoah Valley Chapter of The Military Officers Association of America sponsors this award.

Adrian was also inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS) at Randolph-Macon Academy at a ceremony during Spring Family Weekend. To be selected for the Spanish National Honor Society, a student must maintain an A average in the language over three consecutive semesters and an overall GPA of 3.0.

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs (ASSE) is looking for volunteers to serve as Area Representatives in the community. ASSE provides academic year, semester and short-term exchange programs in the U.S. for high school-aged students from around the world. Host a Chinese Exchange student for two weeks in your home through the U.S.-China Friendship Exchange. A group of students will be here July 8-20 to study English and American culture. Hosts will provide room, board, and hospitality for these visiting students. Students come from Shanghai and Beijing, China, and are 15-17 years old.
