Arlington County AIDS/Sexually Transmitted Disease Services

The primary goals are to prevent infection with and transmission of human immune-deficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and to provide consultation, referral and AIDS drug assistance services for qualified individuals. Counseling, testing, education and outreach are available. Arlington County anonymous HIV testing is available. Clinics are held from 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. No appointment is necessary.
Arlington County Diagnostic and Evaluation Clinic (Child Development Clinic)

The Child Development, or Diagnostic and Evaluation, Clinic is one of 12 clinics serving state residents from birth to 21 years of age who have, or are suspected of having, developmental delays, learning disabilities, behavioral difficulties or emotional problems. A multi-disciplinary team assesses the children.
Arlington County Communicable Disease Program

The goal of the program is to prevent the transmission of communicable diseases (e.g., hepatitis, meningitis and shigella) in the community through active surveillance and prompt response. The program provides investigation and surveillance of reportable communicable diseases in Arlington County as mandated by state law. Community education and consultation are provided.
Arlington County Dental Clinic

The program goal is to prevent the harmful effects of dental diseases among members of the target population: children through high school age and adults 60 years of age and older. Core services include preventive and diagnostic procedures such as examinations, x-rays and fluoride treatments. Costs are determined on a sliding scale based on income. If a child receives free school lunch, dental services are also free.
Arlington County Family Health Nursing

The Family Health Bureau provides home-based case management services by public health nurses for women of child-bearing age, children ages birth to school age, and their families. The nurses work in collaboration with families in a caring, supportive, professional relationship. They provide assessment, teaching, guidance, advocacy and community linkage, thereby empowering families to become independent and informed to make decisions that maximize their health and well-being. The clinic is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 8 a.m. –12 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays 12 p.m.–4 p.m.
Arlington County Family Planning Clinic

Services include providing contraception, pregnancy testing and counseling, physical examinations, and health screenings for sexually transmitted diseases, chronic diseases and HIV. The Family Planning Clinic is open to all area residents Monday and Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday morning and every other week on Thursday. Costs are determined on a sliding scale based on income. Free pregnancy testing is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8 a.m.-noon, and Tuesday and Thursday, noon-4 p.m, but patients need to call for an appointment; identification is required.
Arlington County Immunization Clinic

The Code of Virginia requires that children be immunized against selected diseases and lets schools refuse entry to children who are not immunized. Call the vaccine coordinator at 228-1285 for more information. Immunizations are free for eligible children. Costs for others depend on age and insurance status. The clinic is open for walk-in appointments.
Arlington County Maternity Clinic

Provides prenatal care consisting of clinic visits, health education, nutrition counseling and case management services. The target population is women who are pregnant, reside in Arlington County and have no health insurance coverage or access to prenatal care. The clinic is open Monday 7:30-8 a.m., Tuesday 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m.–7 p.m., Thursday from noon-2 p.m., and Friday 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m. Call for an appointment.
Arlington Country Parent-Infant Education Program (PIE)

The PIE program works to reduce the impact of developmental delays and disabilities on the growth and development of children from birth to 2 years. The program also works with families, providing early intervention services for developmentally disabled children. This program is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
Arlington County Refugee Clinic

The Refugee Clinic program provides health screening, referral, counseling and education for newly arrived refugees, free of charge. The program’s goal is to prevent or minimize the spread of communicable disease and prevent long-term chronic illness in people who have recently arrived in the United States through federal refugee programs. Must be a newly arrived refugee and live in Arlington County in order to receive services. By appointment only.

The program goal is to prevent the transmission of tuberculosis by appropriate identification, assessment, monitoring and treatment of active cases and of those exposed to tuberculosis in Arlington County. The program also provides community education and serves as a resource to the medical community and community at large.

WWC/NOVA is the first regional center of Whitman-Walker Clinic and was established as a distinct program for residents of Northern Virginia who are affected by HIV/AIDS and members of this community who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. All services are provided with full confidentiality for clients. The NOVA facility is accessible to the disabled and provides the following services: access, medical services, body work, case management, housing counseling, mental health, healing garden, education and prevention, legal services and services in other languages.

Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, is a 334-bed community hospital and features a nine-story hospital building, 1,100 parking spaces and an increased Emergency Department, one result of extensive renovations and additions. It is a full-service facility with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment and facilities. A comprehensive array of inpatient and outpatient services in a variety of medical specialties are offered.

Walk-in physical exams are available. Efficient occupational health services including immunizations, workers’ compensation care and drug screenings are available. All physicians are board-certified in Family Practice and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Clinical care is provided by an all-RN staff, as well as licensed radiology technicians. All clinical staff have Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification. Arlington Urgent Care features advanced equipment for a full range of diagnostics: on-site is X-ray equipment to detect fractures, audiometry equipment for hearing tests, EKG machines to assess heart health and an on-site laboratory for immediate test results. All major credit cards are accepted. Major health insurance programs are participated in.

Clarendon House is a community-based rehabilitation program that promotes community integration and independence for adults diagnosed with a serious mental illness. The program seeks to prevent psychiatric hospitalization by providing a complete array of services to Clubhouse members, including psychosocial rehabilitation, case management, vocational opportunities, crisis intervention, medication services and social opportunities. Clarendon House emphasizes general work experience. In addition to employment placements, Clarendon House has three work units — communications, maintenance and food — that provide members with tasks that increase their feelings of self-esteem and self-worth and develop a sense of community.

Emergency Mental Health Services provides crisis intervention, stabilization, support, counseling, follow-up services and pre-admission screening for persons requiring emergency psychiatric hospitalization. Its goals are to prevent symptom deterioration and destabilization by assessing the specific need for mental health intervention and appropriately coordinating and/or facilitating the service linkages required to meet that need. This program is the primary link to other mental health services.
Mental Health Treatment Teams provide outreach case management, crisis assessment and intervention, individual and group psychotherapy, and the prescription and monitoring of psychotropic medication. Vocational services are available on a limited basis to eligible clients. Mental health services oriented toward prevention of suicides, deterioration, hospitalization and disciplinary problems are offered to inmates of the county's Detention Center.

Services are intended for families with children ages 3-18 years with serious emotional disturbances or who are at risk of developing serious emotional disturbances. The goals are to prevent the onset or exacerbation of serious mental health problems and to develop/restore adaptive, stable functioning in the child and family within the home, school and community.

The primary goal of the program is to promote or enhance independent living of persons 65 years of age and older through the stabilization of their mental illness or emotional disturbance. The program uses a multi-disciplinary approach to psychiatric treatment and includes comprehensive assessments, medication services, psychotherapy, case coordination, outreach and consultation.

The goal is to improve the functioning of individuals and families and prevent the deterioration of and adverse social consequences for individuals and the community resulting from alcohol and drug dependency. The continuum of treatment services includes the following: assessment, outpatient therapy and education programs, case management services, detoxification and residential treatment (of varying length and intensity). Programs provided directly by the county include prevention and early intervention in the schools, outpatient treatment, substance abuse education, case management and jail-based treatment programs. Methadone treatment, detoxification, residential treatment and transitional living services are provided through contracts with other agencies, primarily private nonprofit providers.

The goal of this school-based program is to prevent the development of alcohol and drug problems among youths by providing an array of services to students, parents and teachers. These services include assessment, support groups, linkages to treatment services and staff/parent consultation and training.
