</b> The City of Alexandria invites design submissions from architects, landscape architects, artists, students, and the general public to memorialize and honor the 1,800 individuals—who escaped slavery by fleeing to Alexandria during the Civil War—that are buried in Contrabands and Freedmen’s Cemetery. The three-acre site is located at the southwest corner of Church and South Washington Streets in Alexandria. Submissions are due Friday, April 25. "Imaging Blackness" Exhibition Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe Street through March 7. This new exhibition, "Imaging Blackness, 1915-2002: Film Posters from the Indiana University Black Film Center/Archive," features dozens of movie posters from a variety of black films, including westerns, musicals and dramas. These vintage posters represent the marketing of black entertainers who contradicted or strengthened stereotypes as they built a successful place for African Americans in film. A film series will be held in conjunction with this unique study of commercial art, American cinema and black history. Free!
