For any high school hoops junkie around the area, there’s not a better time of the year than Christmas break. With school out of session, the best players in the Northern region get a chance to shine in area holiday tournaments.
Once again this year, the Wakefield boy’s basketball team will host its annual Holiday tournament. This year’s field features some potentially intriguing matchups with Washington-Lee, undefeated defending state champion T.C. Williams, the Titans’ Alexandria rival St. Stephen/St. Agnes, Annandale, Massaponax, Forest Park, and Osbourn Park joining Wakefield in the bracket.
Quarterfinal action begins at 1 p.m. on Dec. 27, with the semifinals to take place on Dec. 29 and the championship game on Dec. 30 at 6:15 p.m. All action will take place at Wakefield High School.
The <b>Yorktown</b> boy’s basketball team will take part in the annual Mount Vernon Holiday Basketball Tournament at Mount Vernon High School. The Patriots will take on McKinley Tech in quarterfinal action on Dec. 26 at 3 p.m. The semifinals and finals follow on Dec. 27 and Dec. 29, respectively.
The <b>Bishop O’Connell</b> boy’s team could put a midseason stamp on its legitimacy as a top-50 team with some jet setting over winter break in two national tournaments — the Mission Prep Classic in California and the Bojangles Shootout in North Carolina.
The <b>Wakefield</b> girl’s team will take part in the Oakton Holiday Tournament beginning Dec. 26.
