Hinson Peters of Chantilly, a junior at Paul VI Catholic High School, recently won third place in the 2008 Voice of Democracy speech contest. The theme of this year's contest was "Service and Sacrifice by America's veterans benefits today's youth by..."
Hinson also attended the 2008 Congressional Student Leadership Conference on Law & Trial Advocacy, sponsored by LeadAmerica. The CSLC is a college-accredited invitational leadership program for academically talented and promising young leaders from across the United States and internationally. Hinson joined other exceptional high school students with records of academic achievement and extracurricular or community involvement who were invited to participate.
The CSLC on Law & Trial Advocacy was held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, and included lectures and discussions with prominent attorneys, judges, and legal experts. Students also participated in interactive leadership workshops.
The Centreville High School Choral Department will be performing its Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. All six choirs in the program will perform on the concert: Bella Voce, Concert Choir, Madrigal Ensemble, Men’s Ensemble, Symphonic Choir, and Women’s Ensemble. The director of the Centreville High School Choral Program is Lynne Babcock. The piano accompanist for the concert will be Michael Maher. Cost of admission will be $3 for students and $5 for adults.
ABC-TV will air "Drama High — The Making of a High School Musical," which chronicles Westfield High's production of "The Wiz" in a two-hour special on Monday, Dec. 15 from 9-11 p.m. on Channel 7. The show followed the 12-week rehearsal process of last fall's production of "The Wiz." The crew taped 300 hours of footage, from Sept.-Dec. 2007. Four Fairfax County high schools have been named to the list of top 100 high schools in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) was named the top high school in the country for the second consecutive year.
Ranked 55th on the list of America’s Best High Schools is McLean High School. Langley High School was ranked 76th, and Woodson High School was ranked at 90.
Schools recognized for meeting specific criteria were designated as Silver high schools, and additional schools were identified as Bronze schools based on their performance on state tests. Seven Fairfax County high schools received Silver recognition: Chantilly High School, Lake Braddock Secondary School, Madison High School, Marshall High School, Oakton High School, Robinson Secondary School, and Stuart High School.
Chantilly High School's SGA is working with Our Neighbor's Child to collect toys, supplies, sort holiday gifts, and by holding a wrapping paper drive. Donations of toys and wrapping paper may be dropped off at the main office. Or bring wrapping paper to the girls basketball games on Dec. 12, and 19th. Each roll is $1 off the ticket price.
A new Chipotle Mexican restaurant is opening at the Marketplace at Centre Ridge at 6317 Multiplex Dr., Centreville. Thursday, Dec. 11, the SYA is holding its fund-raiser there from 5-9 p.m. A $5 donation is good toward any meal. All proceeds (100 percent) will be given to the respective organizations. The Chipotle is scheduled to open to the public on Friday, Dec. 12.
TJHSST will perform "Oklahoma!" on Dec. 12, 13, 14. The show times are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. This is TJ's Cappies production.

Registration began Nov. 17 for the spring 2009 semester at Northern Virginia Community. People who register early may defer paying tuition until Dec. 19. Anyone who registers after Dec. 19 must pay tuition before 5 p.m. on the next business day. Classes in the 16-week semester begin Jan. 12. NOVA also offers two eight-week sessions which start Jan. 12 and March 16. The eight-week sessions cover the same material and award the same credits as 16-week courses. Junior and senior corps of cadets interview for leadership positions in the spring semester and serve in their assigned position for the fall or spring semester of the following year. Cadet officers lead between 30 and 200 cadets.
Samantha Luffy of Centreville was selected to play a performer for University of Mary Washington production of "Elegies: A Song Cycle." Luffy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Luffy of Centreville and is a 2007 graduate of Westfield High School. Performances were held Sept. 25 through Oct. 5 in Klein Theatre.
Alexis Reyes of Centreville recently completed a training program at NOVA’s Manassas Campus. Working with Tire Kingdom, the Manassas Campus automotive program created a special, five-week course to teach basic automotive skills and provide employment opportunities.

Clifton Children's Academy is offering a new Accelerated Junior Kindergarten program.
