High School Roundup: Yorktown Soccer Bounces Back

Washington-Lee boys lacrosse earns non-district win after two close losses.

Yorktown was billed as the team to beat in the Northern Region. But the Patriots (5-1, 1-0) lost a heartbreaker to Jefferson, the defending Virginia AAA state champs on March 31. Yorktown lost 1-0 in overtime, but bounced back with shutouts over Annandale and Mount Vernon.

Against the Atoms, the Patriots recorded a 6-0 shutout with senior forward Kurt Freemyer netting a hat trick. Sergio Mejia, David Grebb and Matt Gordon also tallied goals.

In the blowout victory against Mount Vernon, which was the National District opener for the Patriots, Freemyer, Gordon, C.J. Bartholomew and Miguel Alvarez scored Yorktown's goals.

The Washington-Lee boys soccer team recorded a 3-2 district win over a resurgent Edison on April 4 to get their first victory of the season. The Generals, coached by Jimmy Carrasquillo had dropped their first four games of the season. That included one-goal defeats to Westfield, Marshall and West Springfield and a 3-1 defeat to Annandale.

Senior midfield Andrew McClellan is the team’s lone captain, and leads a roster with seven seniors. Washington-Lee traveled to Fairfax on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Wakefield got their third victory of the season with a 1-0 shutout of Oakton. The Warriors coached by Fernando Castro, earned wins over McLean and Lee to open the season before a 6-1 trouncing by T.C. Williams on March 28.

Wakefield bounced back with a 3-3 tie at Marshall before the victory over winless Oakton. Roderick Likonko punched in a corner kick from teammate Luis Gochez for the team’s lone goal in the 52nd minute.

The Warriors only have two seniors on the roster, including Luis Gochez-Carranza, who is leading the team in goals scored. Wakefield has 15 juniors on the roster.

<b>IN BASEBALL</b>, most of the games were postponed both on Friday, Saturday and Monday nights. The brief break gave a couple struggling teams time to regroup.

Winless Wakefield had their district opener against Mount Vernon cancelled on separate occasions, but will travel to Falls Church on Wednesday.

The Warriors got a week off after its sixth straight loss, an 11-3 defeat to former district foe Loudoun Valley on April 2. Senior Josh Jones drilled a three-run triple for Wakefield.

For Yorktown’s baseball team, the season start may be just as disappointing.

The Patriots (1-4) dropped a 9-6 non-district game to T.C. Williams on April 2. The Titans notched three runs in the top half of the first inning, but Yorktown raced back in the bottom of the third.

Yorktown used back-to-back home runs by Kyle Toulouse and Jack Bergsman to take a 5-4 lead, but T.C. Williams relief pitcher Sam Bair tossed only 53 pitches over the final four innings to shut down the Patriots’ bats, and get the win.

Billy Edgar (0-1) took the loss in relief of starter Danny Johnsen, who struck . Zach Madison had a hit and an RBI for Yorktown.

<b>IN BOYS LACROSSE</b>, Washington-Lee picked up a 16-8 road victory over T.C. Williams on Monday amid nasty weather. The Generals had dropped heartbreakers over Yorktown and Mount Vernon in their previous games.

The Patriots, who haven’t lost a district game in three seasons, won 7-5, including an insurance goal with two seconds left. Washington-Lee lost to Mount Vernon 11-10 on April 3.
