On Monday, May 28, at 11 a.m., the Friends of the Great Falls Freedom Memorial will host a Memorial Day service at the Great Falls Freedom Memorial, in remembrance for those who have died defending the nation. Brig. Gen. Vincente Blaz, USMC, Ret., will be the keynote speaker and share officiating duties with Dranesville Supervisor Joan DuBois.

The Friends will be collecting funds for the purchase of international calling cards for soldier stationed overseas. Residents are asked to use the collection jars placed at local businesses or send a check made out to “Friends of the Great Falls Memorial” and mail to Great Falls Charitable Foundation, P.O. Box 295, Great Falls, VA 22066.

The National Men’s Chorus, conducted by Thomas Beveridge, and the U.S. Army Chorus, conducted by Lt. Col. John Clanton, will present a Memorial Day concert at 5 p.m., Sunday, May 27, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean. Admission is free, no tickets are required. Community Dialogue with McLean Community Connections: “We Are Many – Can We Be One?” Thursday, May 31, 6:30-9:30 p.m., at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Ave.

McLean Community Connections has been organized by local residents to promote dialogue within its multicultural community. Participants group themselves around tables of eight persons each to facilitate an open and respectful exchange of ideas and opinions. Participants are asked to speak from a “me” perspective rather than from what they have read, heard on the radio, or witnessed on television. Each table of participants will be assisted by a trained group facilitator. Community Connections invites all individuals living, working, worshipping or visiting in the McLean area to participate in this upcoming dialogue. Space is available for only 150 people so early registration is encouraged.

McLean area residents can register now to participate in McLean Community Center’s summer garage sale. The sale will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, June 2, at the center, 1234 Ingleside Ave. Selling spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be purchased for $50. Reserve a table for lunch or dinner at Dante Ristorante’s Third Annual Memorial Fund-raiser, June 3-10, and help fight the battle against blood cancers. The event benefits the mission of the National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: to find a cure for blood cancers and to improve the lives of patients and their families. Dante Ristorante is housed in the historic Leigh House at 1148 Walker Road in Great Falls. The restaurant is extending its hours for the week; lunch will be served daily 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; dinner will be served 5:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Reservations should be made in advance by calling 703-759-3131. The McLean Branch of the American Association of University Women will be collecting used books, CD’s, tapes, videos and software on Saturday, June 9 at the Sun Trust Bank, 515 Maple Ave. E in Vienna. The collections will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. No records, textbooks or encyclopedias will be accepted. Children’s books are needed.
