Gertrude Pell Poppendieck of Applewood Estates, Freehold Township, N.J., died on Feb. 25. She was born in Ridgewood, N.J. in 1911, attended Roxbury High School and graduated from Montclair State Teachers’ College in 1932. She taught high school social studies and coached the girls basketball team in Sussex County, N.J. until her marriage to Robert Poppendieck in 1934. She and her husband raised three daughters in Metuchen, New Jersey and
later in Alexandria. Mrs. Poppendieck worked as a substitute teacher and was active in civic organizations including the Alexandria Historical Society and the Beverley Hills Community Church, where she sponsored the youth fellowship group and delivered meals on wheels. Mr. And Mrs. Poppendieck moved to Freehold in 1991.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years and her eldest daughter, Carol. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Trudie Prevatt of Fort Myers, Fla., and Janet Poppendieck and Woody Goldberg of Brooklyn, N.Y., two grandchildren, Banks Prevatt, Jr and Amanda Goldberg, one great granddaughter, Juliette Morgan, and a brother and sister, C. Ross Pell of Manasquan, N.J. and Elizabeth Branin of Wayne N.J.
