Muriel A. Howells, 91, peacefully died on March 11 at the Mount Vernon Nursing Center. Muriel and her late husband Trevor lived in the Mount Vernon area for over 40 years and were active members of Messiah Lutheran Church. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Valerie and Jim Johnston and Ladean and Chuck Rigney and her three grandchildren Krista, Trevor and Shana.
A native of Baltimore, Mrs. Howells graduated from Maryland State Teacher's College at Towson and was an elementary school teacher for three years. While working as a department manager at W.W. Woolworth's, she met and married the store's assistant manager Trevor Howells and they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 2001.
Muriel Howells was known for her positive attitude toward life, gentle love for family and devotion to her Lord. She quickly made friends and established warm relationships with everyone she met. Muriel and Trev were active members of Messiah Lutheran Church serving in various roles but none more visible than their unselfish stewardship for the church at large, United Community Ministries and fund raising projects for those in need.
A memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church on March 30 at 10 a.m. with burial at Quantico National Cemetery at 2 p.m.
