Around 300 people showed up at White Oaks Elementary to experience a little diversity right in Burke, Friday, March 2. The school's multicultural committee sponsored the event, which featured homemade food representing cuisine from around the world, music, dance and cultural dress.
Robert Smalls, chair of the committee, said the point of the event is "to enlighten and educate students about different countries within our school, as well as our community."
In addition to educating the students, the event also served as an experience for parents to get together and learn about other cultures.
The committee tried a similar event about two years ago, said Smalls, but lacked the organization and the participation for such a large-scale celebration. After seeing this year's success, Smalls said the committee will definitely have another multicultural night next year.
