The School Board named two elementary schools, scheduled to open next year, at its July meeting.
The School Board adopted Liberty Elementary School as the name of ES-18, located in South Riding Station, by a margin of 6-0-3, with board members J. Warren Geurin (Sterling), John Stevens (Potomac) and Mark Nuzacco (Catoctin) absent for the vote.
ES-19, located in the One Loudoun subdivision in Ashburn, will be named Stewart Weller Elementary School, after a long-time volunteer.
Sam Adamo, director of the Department of Planning and Legislative Services, referred to Weller as the "unofficial mayor of Ashburn."
"In his honor and his memory, that’s what the [naming] committee has suggested," he said.
School Board member Bob Ohneiser (Broad Run) said he fully supported the name of the new school.
"No child would be left behind with Mr. Weller around," Ohneiser said. "Someday I look forward to walking around the fancy ‘W’ that will be located in the lobby, in tile."
The board voted 7-0-2, with Stevens and Nuzacco absent for the vote.
The second western Loudoun High School, located in Purcellville, will be named Woodgrove High School.
Woodgrove is the name of the first main settlement of western Loudoun. It is scheduled to open in January 2009.
