Volunteer Emergency Families For Children (VEFC) needs volunteers willing to open their homes and provide short term (1-21 days) emergency shelter to local children who are victims of abuse, neglect, etc. Volunteers can choose the age, gender, and length of stay for each placement. Northern Virginia Family Service needs volunteers to move its Bailey's Crossroads thrift store. Helpers are needed Feb. 24 and 25 to pack merchandise, disassemble store furnishings (requires basic carpentry skills and tools), load and unload trucks (requires heavy lifting) and move items to Centerville. Two vans are also needed to transport smaller items. Choose from 4 hour shifts or all day. Proceeds from the Clock Tower Thrift Shops benefit over 35 programs that help individuals and families throughout Northern Virginia. The Alexandria Domestic Violence Program is looking for volunteers to provide hotline coverage and crisis counseling to survivors of domestic violence. The program is also specifically seeking children's group leaders and bi-lingual translators. Volunteers are required to participate in 40 hours of training and requested to donate 10-15 hours per month over weekends and holidays. You are invited to make a difference in one child's future learning success by volunteering through the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC) to tutor a first or second grader in the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). There are still children who do not have tutors who were identified last fall by teachers and pre-testing as needing additional help in reading. The Alexandria Office on Women is recruiting new volunteers for its winter training with the Speakers Bureau. The Office on Women's Speakers' Bureau is a group of volunteers who present an education program on domestic violence, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and teen pregnancy prevention to Alexandria youth. The Speakers Bureau presents to 5th-, 7th- and 9th-graders throughout the school year. The expected volunteer commitment is four to six hours per month and volunteers must have the flexibility to present during the school day. The 10-hour required training will be held on Monday, Jan. 29 from 6:30-10 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Training in the classroom will be scheduled after volunteers attend the two training dates. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training (TNT) is recruiting volunteers to help in the fight against blood cancers by raising funds as they train to walk, run, cycle or swim in honor of local patients. Team In Training provides personalized coaching, group training and support, and the chance to meet new people and be part of a team. In addition to weekly training sessions under the guidance of a certified coach, TNT offers training events and clinics on nutrition, equipment, injury prevention and safety. After four to five months of training, team members will be prepared to walk or run a marathon (26.2 miles) or half-marathon, or participate in a triathlon (swimming, cycling, and running). Join the Volunteer Corp of the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum. This museum in Old Town Alexandria is looking for Volunteer Tour Guides who love history and enjoy working with the public. No experience is necessary. Volunteers should be able to contribute one morning or afternoon a month. Tours Guides are needed for weekdays, some weekday nights and weekends. The training process is simple and flexible. Simply meet with the Volunteer Coordinator to receive your training packet, observe five tours and pass your tour review. The Fairfax Area Agency on Aging's Meals on Wheels (MOW) program is in immediate need of volunteers to deliver meals during the week, Monday-Friday, to senior adults who live at Manchester Lakes Senior Apartments, located in Alexandria. This is a unique MOW opportunity, as volunteers only need to show-up at 11:30 a.m. and hand-deliver the meals to the seniors by 1 p.m. No prior pick-up location is required. Volunteers can choose to deliver meals on a daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly or substitute basis.
