Belmont Ridge Middle School begins its fifth year in September with approximately 1,000 students. There is a new principal, Timothy J. Flynn, who comes to Belmont from Charlottesville, Va. There are a few other staff changes with about 15 new teachers joining the faculty.

Bookkeeper Patricia Crim says the PTO will host a community picnic Aug. 23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the school.

Students will receive their class schedule at orientation, which will be Aug. 30, from 9-11:30 a.m., for the sixth grade and from 1-3 p.m. for the seventh grade. Orientation for the eighth grade is scheduled for Aug. 31, from 9-11 a.m.

Parents are invited to meet the staff at back-to-school night, which will be Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. for sixth grade, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. for eighth grade and Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. for seventh grade.

Principal Sherryl Loya

Named a "School to Watch" last year by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grade Reforms, Farmwell Station Middle School hopes to "continue the tradition of high achievement," Principal Sherryl Loya said.

This year’s enrollment is approximately 1,050 students. There has been very little staff turnover. There are 10 new teachers, which Loya says gives the school a stable, experienced staff.

There will be an orientation and ice cream social for incoming sixth-grade students and new seventh- and eighth-graders Aug. 30, from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

The PTO is making school supply shopping easy for students and parents. "They will have everything you need, even tissue, at a greatly reduced price," Loya said. The school supplies will be on sale every evening the first week of school fr
