Joan Clowes of Potomac took home the first prize in last week's KC Masterpiece "Memorable Meals" Contest at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair. The winning entry was Honey teriyaki shrimp with wasabi slaw. Clowes was one of nine contestants, said Jessica Poncelet, the event's publicity coordinator. The entries were judged on flavor, ease of creation, and presentation.
After watching her children take home various prizes for arts and crafts at the festivals over the years, Clowes decided to go after a ribbon of her own.
"This year I said, 'Well, i think i'll try something.' This was the first time I'd ever done a cooking contest."
Clowes used frozen, pre-cooked shrimp, store-bought, pre-cut slaw and Manishewitz creamy wasabi sauce.
"Manishewitz and Chinese, who knew," said Clowes.
Clowes said her creation takes five minutes to put together.
As the first prize winner Clowes got a blue ribbon and a $200 cash reward. Below are ingredients and instructions for the recipe:
"It's unexpected; everyone knows the shrimp cocktail with the ketchup and horseradish, this is just with an Asian flair," said Clowes.
Here is the award-winning recipe:
1/2 cup KC Masterpiece Honey Teriyaki Barbeque Sauce
3/4 pounds cooked frozen shrimp (large tail-on, approximately 16 shrimp)
1-12 ounce bag of broccoli cole slaw
3 tablespoons creamy wasabi horseradish sauce
breadsticks to garnish
Thaw shrimp in colander under cool running water. Drain and place in medium bowl. Pour KC Masterpiece Honey Teriyaki Barbeque sauce over shrimp. Mix gently with a spoon. Set aside. Pour pre-washed broccoli cole slaw in large bowl. Mix wasabi horseradish sauce into slaw. For stronger taste, add more wasabi. To serve arrange slaw on serving plate. Arrange shrimp on top of slaw. Garnish with breasticks.
Note: If using raw shrimp, marinade in Honey Teriyaki sauce, cook on grill or in the oven. Then discard remaining marinade. If desired, brush on fresh Honey Teriyaki sauce.
