National Night Out Crime Prevention activities were held at eight locations throughout Mount Vernon District and the southeastern portion of Lee District Tuesday night under the sponsorship of various home owner and civic associations.
Each year residents join with representatives of the Fairfax County police and fire departments to increase awareness of ways to help prevent crime in neighborhoods. One of the locales participating in the event was the Pinewood Lakes development where residents, joined by area police and fire officials, were treated to pizza and cold soda on an unusually hot and sticky night around the community pool.
Refreshments for the various gatherings are either prepared by residents or donated by area businesses. In the case of Pinewood Lakes the pizzas were supplied by Bugsy's Pizza Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria, sodas came from the Mount Vernon Safeway on Richmond Highway, and Verizon supplied the ice. Target on Richmond Highway supplied the pinwheels for the children.
